1 Comfrey for composting There is so much greatness in comfrey that every food garden should have some. Early common names include knitbone or boneset, because of its historical use for treating sprains and bone fractures. In the food garden it can be planted in full sun or semi-shade, and the leaves used in compost to speed up decomposition. It is also a natural fertiliser and full of nutrients like calcium, potassium, iron, manganese and phosphorus, perfect for fruiting plants like tomatoes and peppers. Use the leaves as a mulch to feed plants and attract slugs and snails from the surrounding plants, or make your own liquid fertiliser by adding the leaves and water to a container and letting it stand for a few days. 2 Trending: Your own coffee tree indoors! terracotta pots for best effect

Why terracotta? As we discussed in the Spring issue, terracotta pots have a number of practical benefits for plants: Terracotta pots are able to breathe, allowing air and even moisture to move through the walls, keeping pants healthier and helping to prevent fungal root disease. Plants don’t like sudden changes in temperature, and terracotta pots act as insulation, slowing down variations in temperature. Just before Lanseria airport there is an industrial complex: featureless warehouses, security booms and paved car park. It's the last place you would expect to find a potager that’s lush with salad vegetables, bees buzzing among blue-flowering borage, and a shady arbour screened by lemon trees. It just goes to show that you can grow vegetables and herbs anywhere provided you’ve got the imagination, passion and space. going wriggly tin

Our office veggie garden is a trial garden of sorts so is always evolving and changing. We like to try things out, experiment with different veggies, gardening techniques and garden products like fertilisers and biological control agents like the new EcoBuz range. And when we recently decided to add some containers to our garden, we looked around for something fresh and new, that would complement the appearance of the garden and still be long lasting and practical. While searching for something that would fit the bill we came across the beautiful ‘wriggly tin’ (what the Aussies call corrugated iron!) containers from RainQueen. sumptuous summer produce

The summer bounty at Albertvale Farm is abundant and delicious and ready for some serious processing and eating. What a pleasure to wake up in the early mornings and hear the cacophony of birdsong, the chatting of the little lambs and the rustling of the wildlife in the garden. I have used most of my autumn leaves to generously mulch my garden paths. It makes a wonderful soft and earthy feel underfoot, and I can walk barefoot through the garden. I feel this is essential for that grounding and energy injection to start the day.
