The exciting world of kit, prefabricated, manufactured and modular homes is ever evolving and these options are now an increasingly sophisticated housing choice, with the advantages of architect-designed residences, but without the price tag. No doubt this will be music to your ears if you’re considering this type of build. One thing you may notice about the homes that we showcase throughout the Kit & Manufactured Homes Yearbook is the wide variety of styles — from period-style designs to contemporary creations — that are available. You could have a country estate, a coastal block or even a suburban site — these homes can work in any location. This issue, we’ve compiled an international prefab home feature (from page 30) to give you the burst of inspiration you may need to push your…

small is beautiful

Many options for this family’s renovation needs were considered, such as the ever-popular instant upstairs addition and rear extension featuring a bedroom, rumpus and bathroom. However, the reality was that this would create a costly, inefficient-to-heat or –cool and often-unused space — particularly when the family wanted to all be together and when the teenagers were to eventually move out. Most homes in Sydney’s inner west are restricted by heritage or conservation council regulations, therefore an option was needed for an extension to this California bungalow that could not be seen from street view. The solution was The FuturePOD, a structure that’s less than 20m² in size and that requires no council approval (conditions apply) but follows strict Building Code of Australia guidelines and employs eco-friendly design methods and materials. The aim…

INFORMATION AND PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE MASTER BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF NSW A GRANNY FLAT FOR A REAL GRANNY This granny flat was built for a granny to live in and since the owner was downsizing from the main house to the granny flat, her requirements were simple: as much storage space as possible, and to make the design comfortable and modern. The design ticks all the boxes and is tucked well away behind the main house, with a shared courtyard for the whole family. The final product contains modern finishes and appliances throughout, with a large shower, separate laundry room with overhead storage cupboards and even a small outdoor sitting area. The external material is a Weathertex product, which provides a clean, linear finish to the building facade. JUDGES’ COMMENTS: Like many granny flats,…
