review: 16in macbook pro

Price: £3,069 (inc VAT) from fave.co/2KTpa1K With the 16in MacBook Pro, the company set out to create a laptop that would satisfy user demand – and that’s a little different way of doing things for Apple. Most users are used to Apple setting the tone and direction, and expecting users to just go with the flow. But it finally got to breaking point, and users started to loudly complain about the things they didn’t like about the MacBook Pro. So, Apple corrected course. With the prior 15in model, there was always a “Yeah, but…” With the 16in MacBook Pro that replaces it, there are fewer chances for users to say, “Yeah, but….” The new laptop is a great combination of usability and performance, and it fixes the biggest issues with its predecessor. Bye-bye…

why apple’s 16in macbook pro is a repudiation of the ‘ive doctrine’

It’s not the first and it won’t be the last, but the new 16in MacBook Pro gives probably the clearest sign thus far that Apple has changed its priorities when it comes to the Mac. It’s a process that’s been visible in public for a couple of years now, and it’s not quite done – but here in the latter half of 2019, we’re getting our clearest look at a company that got out of sync with some of its most important customers and has realized it needs to change some of its assumptions about product design. Tweaking Jobs’s Law Apple is clearly guided, at least in part, by a design philosophy that considers size and weight to be the enemy of good. I like to call this Jobs’s Law, though it…

opinion: the new macbook pro is nice, but it’s missing a few things

Apple has taken the wraps off the long-rumoured 16in MacBook Pro, and it ushers in a new era for the highest-end Mac notebook you can buy. Most notably, it brings a much-needed change to the keyboard, eschewing the maligned butterfly mechanism for more traditional scissor keys that should be quieter and more reliable than recent models. But along with a bigger screen, better speakers, and more battery, the new MacBook Pro still feels like an iterative update rather than a transformative one. Yes, it introduces a new screen size for the first time in years and retires a model that’s been in existence for more than a decade, but aside from some extra pixels, the new notebook doesn’t really break the mould or offer much in the way of big change. That’s…

macbook buyer’s guide

If you’re reading this article, then the chances are you’re thinking about buying a new laptop and may be in need of a little guidance. Fortunately, we’re quite familiar with MacBooks, and we’re happy to help you choose the right one for you. This buying guide provides an overview of all the models available, and what each model is best suited for. MacBook Air The MacBook Air is Apple’s affordable line of laptops. Two 13in models are currently available. It’s ideal for the budget conscious, or for anyone who is always on the go, doesn’t want to be bogged down by a regular-size laptop, and needs a computer that’s more versatile than an iPad. Specifications: The two MacBook Air models have the same 1.6GHz dual-core Core i5 (eighth-generation) processor and 8GB of RAM.…

thunderbolt 3 adaptor guide

The new MacBook Pro comes with two or four external ports, depending on the model you pick. And the new MacBook Air has a pair of ports. But those ports are only of one type: Thunderbolt 3, which is compatible with USB-C. But you probably have devices that use USB-A, Thunderbolt 1, Thunderbolt 2, DisplayPort, HDMI, or something else. How do you connect these devices? With an adaptor. If you’re planning to buy a new MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, make sure you set aside a considerable amount of cash for the adaptors you need. Apple doesn’t include any in the box, except for a power adaptor. Your best bet is to get a combination dock, like the Satechi Slim Aluminium Type-C Multi-Port Adaptor (£60 from fave.co/2P3ZRev. It connects via USB-C, and…

best antivirus for mac

Macs may be a far less tempting target for malware and viruses, but they’re not immune from attack. Even if you don’t care about adware or being used as a means to infect users on other platforms, it’s still possible to fall victim to ransomware, password theft, or stolen iPhone backups. Accordingly, good antivirus software will protect your Mac on all of these fronts. It’ll catch malware that’s still spreading or in circulation; block ransomware; protect older systems with out-of-date software from security vulnerabilities; prevent your Mac from acting as a carrier for malware aimed at other operating systems; and keep infected files off of any virtual machines you’re running. Many antivirus suites provide a decent level of protection, but a few rise above all others by providing the very best…
