SEE MORE mby.com/j36 At MBY we pride ourselves on being country agnostic when it comes to testing boats; in other words we treat all boats equally, regardless of where they’ve been built. It’s not the country of origin that matters to us but the quality of the end product. It’s why we still get looks of stunned surprise from overseas yards when we, as a British based magazine, choose to give the top prizes in our Motor Boat Awards to French, Italian or Polish boatbuilders rather than British ones, as we did in many of this year’s categories. Apparently, the idea of a British boat winning an Italian award is simply unfathomable. That’s not to say that we don’t take pride in British craftsmanship, we absolutely do, as I hope this issue…

WIFI WOES In this modern world of technology, one of my biggest frustrations is poor quality WiFi in marinas, with the signal often dropping at a crucial moment. In a forthcoming edition, can you please run a feature on cost effective WiFi solutions that can be fitted easily within a sensible budget? This would be a great help with the increasing requirement for WiFi and the ever growing use of apps. Keep up the good work with the mag, the new format is excellent and an enjoyable monthly read. When you are pondering weather forecasts for a Channel crossing this season, spare a thought for General Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the D-Day Allied Expeditionary Force exactly 75 years ago. At 0415 on Monday 5th June 1944 this articulate and charming Texan was studying a distinctly low-tech outlook for sea area Wight from his senior forecaster Group Captain James Stagg. This was way before the days of easily accessible met charts, so with Stagg’s partly intuitive bulletin Eisenhower had to decide whether to go ahead with the hugely complex Normandy landings operation, or risk a two-week delay until the next suitable window. The invasion involved 7,000 vessels from eight different navies with 156,000 soldiers and 13,000 vehicles already loaded onto a vast fleet of ships and landing craft. More than 12,000…

One of my favourite lines in the TV series Friends was Joey mistaking ‘moo’ for ‘moot’ in the expression ‘moot point’. His explanation was brilliant; “It’s like a cow’s opinion, it doesn’t matter. It’s moo”. It crossed my mind the other day during an idle five minutes wondering how I’d replace my Jeanneau with a brand new boat. The 805 Leader is pitch perfect for my needs. It fills my 8m berth, but more than that, it is actually the ideal size for my requirements. I can handle the boat very easily single-handed, which not only allows me to go out alone should I wish, but also means I can take out inexperienced friends without having to involve them in the crewing process. Back in the late 1970s I used to ride a bike to school through Richmond Park and even then loved the freedom that this cheap and efficient form of transport offered. A 40-year sabbatical from cycling, combined with four decades of commitment to exploring the joys of fine wine and all things gastronomic, meant that in 2013 I decided ‘fat and 50’ needed to become ‘fit and 50’! By then, of course, cycling had become something of a national pastime, complete with its own livery – so without further ado I joined the burgeoning ranks of mamils.
