AT 12.00AM ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 13, I cranked over the 1.6-litre of my old, underpowered Toyota s**tbox, rolled up the garage door and drove out into a chilly Melbourne night. The difference between 12.00am this day, and 11.59pm the day before, was potentially quite a hefty fine for doing what I was doing. At midnight, MOTOR’s home state Victoria aligned with the other states by lifting its Stage 3 restrictions which, among many things, forbid basically recreational driving. And as you read this, save for the virus (I think unleashed by the dodgy sausage rolls at the Wuhan Wet Market canteen) ripping the Australian economy another one, you can go for a drive if the mood takes you. Some would argue you should have been able to all along but I’d disagree;…

Technical FIRST LOOK DENMARK ISN’T USUALLY the nation that comes to mind when Scandinavian supercars are the topic, but Sweden’s Koenigsegg actually does have a rival, albeit relatively indirect, over the Oresund bridge. Zenvo’s cars might not quite be on par with the likes of the wicked Gemera in terms of its blend of green tech and mega mumbo, but the newest evolution of the ¤1.45 million (AUD$2.42m) Zenvo TSR-S has properly grabbed our attention. Rewind approximately two years, and the TSR-S was first shown off at the Geneva Motor Show, drawing many in with a wing more wicked than one you’d find in one of the Colonel’s buckets. The ‘centripetal’ rear wing was so unusual, the car was reportedly flagged to pit mid-lap at Spa because the track officials thought the…

IN 2007, TROELS Vollertsen started a car company. More than just a Danish bloke with a bit of cash, Vollertsen is an ex-mechanical engineer who’s designed superchargers of his own, while his design director Christian Brandt can claim several years with Alfa Romeo. CEO Angela Kashina completes Vollertsen’s company, Zenvo. The name is a mash-up of the end and beginning of Vollertsen’s family name, the S swapped for a Z. For roughly the past 13 years, Zenvo has built four distinguishable models at its factory in Praesto on Denmark’s largest island, Zealand – no relation to our Pacific neighbour. The first was the ST1 (ST for supercharged and turbocharged), then its evolution to TS1 GT (TS for twin supercharged). The TSR became its track-focused monster, featuring a fixed wing, though the TSR-S, an…

HOLDEN SPECIAL VEHICLES’ show-stopping one-off 2001 HRT Edition Maloo concept could be yours for a cool $250,000 – or possibly less, depending on your bargaining abilities. Its current owner has listed the 350kW, 600Nm Callaway-tuned 6.2-litre V8 LS9 super-ute for sale online. Built in four months for the 2001 Sydney International Motor Show, it rides on massive, bespoke 20-inch magnesium wheels (measuring 9.0-inch wide up front, 10 inches rear) under bulging arches. Styling changes also included the roofline, the A-pillar laid back to get the rake needed for a Monaro windscreen. The B and C-pillars were shortened by 40mm, and moved rearwards. Sitting on a standard wheelbase, the steroidal brute has had its front and rear tracks pumped by 50mm and 75mm respectively, with custom suspension such as front coilover shocks machined at…

FORD PERFORMANCE has revealed the latest Cobra Jet, but it’s not a V8 beast, and you can’t buy it. Instead, this is a one-off, fully electric Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype, but it’s still a beast even without the V8. Under the bonnet is an impressive display of electric tech making 1044kW (or 1400hp, hence the name) and 1491Nm for the Cobra to make instant use of, allowing it to tear up the drag strip in… well, Ford hasn’t actually said officially, but estimates it’ll run a quarter “in the low-8-second range at more than 170mph (274km/h)”. Ford says the Cobra Jet 1400 will appear at drag events in the future, while the world awaits the arrival of the production Mustang Mach-E. - CT…

COVID Update THE GOOD NEWS THE WORLD IS moving again. Or at least some parts of it are. As we go to print, some of the world’s major sports car manufacturers have devised plans to continue their manufacturing operations and keep their employees safe, while other aspects of the fast car world are returning to normal. Manufacturers such as Porsche and Lamborghini have made public their pathways out of the COVID-19 shutdown, with the latter being right in one of the worst-affected regions in the world when the pandemic struck. Lamborghini’s CEO Stefano Domenicali made it clear he knows there is more to be done before the crisis is averted. ”We are ready to restart with great energy, but also with strict protocols for safeguarding what is most precious to us: the safety…
