introduction

Even the most indulgently devoted Interiors reader would be horrified to see the magazine’s offices. Towering piles of books might be expected in any publishing environment, but we also have fabric swatches, rolls of wallpaper, photo-shoot props and pots of paint to contend with. So as I type, I can make out a box of tiles, bubble-wrapped frames, a lamp base and shade, even a wall-mounted shower… But WoI has always put its energy in to showing readers the most perfectly composed rooms it can find, as opposed to creating decorative harmony for itself. Yet neatly shelved behind my desk, a beacon of white-spined good order amid the creative chaos, is a numbered copy of every issue published since our first edition in November 1981. None of the other houses neighbouring hers – some of them very elegant – is so near to the river. But then none of them was once a warehouse, perhaps used for boat-building. In recent decades, Fedden has become remarkably popular thanks to a resurgence of interest in ‘British Modern’. Tremendously prolific, Fedden now sells everything she paints – oil or gouache, still life, landscape, fantasy, or a combination – to an avid crowd of collectors. heal’s heritage

Heal’s has been designing, making and selling high-quality furniture for more than two centuries, so it’s no surprise that the company is known as the home of modern and contemporary aesthetics. From the beginning Heal’s has been at the forefront of design and innovation. Starting out as bed-makers in 1810, Heal’s introduced featherfilled mattresses to a country that had until then been sleeping on straw. When Ambrose Heal Jr joined the family company in 1893 he embraced the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement and was later knighted for his contribution to the landscape of British design. He was also responsible for the famed Mansard Gallery, at the time a bold and even shocking space where the work of the artist Amedeo Modigliani was first exhibited in the UK. Heal’s…

a step up

STEPEVI was born of the belief that a rug is the key component of any interior. Based in Istanbul, where craftsmanship and expertise in carpet-making is part of the culture, the company has boutiques in many capitals the world, including London, Paris, Milan, New York, Munich and Geneva. All its rugs are produced in the company’s workshop in Isparta, a town synonymous with rug production. Such a close relationship with the manufacturing process allows Stepevi to move with the trends and innovate the technology needed to make the finest rugs in the shortest time. The company’s new collection is inspired by the light and freshness that the Bosphorus carries through Istanbul, reflecting its cool breeze in both hue and texture. The colours are muted, ranging from the lightest shades of blue…
