“here comes the sun”

FREE! Anker Powerwave charging pad worth £32 – when you subscribe! p22 Finally, it’s that time of year: time for gin and tonic (okay, a beer for me) on a sun-drenched patio; a picnic in the park; a day lazing on the beach; or a barbecue with friends and family in the back garden. Summer, in all its fickle glory, is here. And with it, the chance to enjoy our music in the fresh air. In this month’s What Hi-Fi? then, we take a look at the equipment that will enable you to take your tunes out and about. From true wireless headphones (p28) to portable DACs (p42) that will make the most of your mobile device’s sonic chops, wired-headphones (p48), upgrades to those bundled buds (you deserve more than that…), and portable…

cambridge audio alva tt

View offers Record player | £1500 | whf.cm/AlvaTT We can’t remember the last time we reviewed a Cambridge Audio turntable, so the £1500 Alva TT comes as quite the surprise. This is no ordinary turntable. It offers features and functionality that we don’t tend to see at this price point, including a built-in phono stage, direct drive and Bluetooth connectivity. Bluetooth turntables have become a fashionable product category, picking up popularity on the back of the vinyl revival. It sounds like an awkward marriage of old and new technology, but it’s undeniably convenient. Rather than investing in a full hi-fi system, all you need is a turntable and a Bluetooth speaker or wireless headphones. You can then submerge yourself in the warm fuzzy glow of vinyl. But the Cambridge Audio Alva TT doesn’t feature…

apple ipad mini (2019)

View offers Tablet | £399 | whf.cm/iPadMini2019 The market for tablets has been stagnant for a while, with many manufacturers now having barely a passing interest. But no one seems to have told Apple – there are now five models in its iPad line-up. The newest is the fifth-generation iPad Mini, the first new iPad Mini since 2015. It crams the specs of the new iPad Air into a more portable chassis – and has the highest pixel density of the current iPad line-up. It’s not the cheapest model, with the standard iPad undercutting it by £80, but while the Mini is the smaller of the two iPads, it’s also the mightier in terms of screen tech, power and storage. Portable cinema The iPad Mini’s form makes it the perfect portable cinema. At 7.9in, the…

the royal albert hall – transforming the sound of a world-class venue

There used to be a quip that London’s Royal Albert Hall offered the best value for money of any auditorium in the world, given concert-goers got to hear the music twice. Though the observation was tonguein-cheek, little had been done to improve the acoustics since the introduction of the iconic ‘mushrooms’ that have hung from the hall’s domed ceiling since 1969. That is until now, when a £2m sonic refurbishment has transformed the sound from arguably the most famous stage, thanks to the world’s largest loudspeaker installation in a single room. Miraculously, the six months of overnight installations didn’t impact on a single one of the 327 individual events scheduled over that period. It’s an impressive feat, given that over 15km of cabling was fitted to connect 465 permanent d&b audiotechnik loudspeakers to…
