california girl

I’M A CALIFORNIA GIRL THROUGH AND THROUGH. Born in Hollywood, moved to the LA burbs when I was a kid and now settled in Orange County. So it was from an early age that I realized these coastal towns all had a flavor of their own. From the Spanish-style charmers in central coast to the post-war bungalows down south and up north the Victorian cottages that looked like candy dollhouses. Of course, the dreamy storybook cottages throughout the state deserve a special mention too. Which brings me to coastal style, just as delightfully diverse as…

keep trim

This sunny beach cottage gets its cheerful curb appeal from lots of detail work that packs big style into a small, pretty façade. Budget Approach: Paint your trim a contrasting color. From window sashes to door frames, there are probably a few areas that painted a peppy color can perk up the whole look of your house. Ready for an upgrade? Board and batten, as seen here, is one of the easier wood-trim styles to incorporate into your home. When you replace basic stucco walls with something with more architectural appeal, your home instantly increases in value. Sunny Styling: Why not have some fun with your decorative details? small but mighty

It was time for this 1930s Cape Cod-style cottage to receive some updates, but not without retaining the home’s original charm. The cottage is located in the historic Westmoreland Hills neighborhood of Bethesda, Maryland, which meant that not only did the home have a history to maintain, but it had to fit into the neighborhood too. “The homeowners’ goal was to maintain the charm of the existing house while increasing the size to meet their family’s needs,” says architectural designer Anthony Wilder of Anthony Wilder Design/Build. “It was also important that they maintain the overall style of the home.”To do this, Anthony added a three-story addition to the back of the structure. Inside, an open floorplan features architectural details such as window casings, arched doorways, wall paneling and wainscoting. When it came…
