making your home your dream

Do you ever have home envy? I know I sure do. Scrolling through Instagram, going down the rabbit hole that is Pinterest or flipping through magazines can leave me longing for a larger home, a better view, a cottage at the beach, a farm with chickens, a modern pool, a vintage kitchen, a charming brick fireplace, walls of shiplap and All. The. Things! Realistically, we know we cannot have it all in one home (although that would be amazing, right?). But we most certainly can make where we are and what we have the best it can be. We can create our own version of dreamy! In this, our annual Dream Cottage issue, we have the pleasure of touring homes that have become their owners’ dream one way or another (page 34, 48,…

double the history

When you ask someone about the architecture of a historic cottage, there’s usually one answer. For this home in Tustin, California, however, the answer is two-fold. “The house was built in 1889,” says architect Carol Tink-Fox of Stratos Form. “The main house is Victorian Italian, but the front porch was added in the 1920s, and they used Craftsman style for that.” Carol and her team made the home livable for the 21st century while maintaining its doubly-historic curb appeal. Located in the historic district of Tustin, there were limited changes Carol could make to the home’s footprint and exterior. The original 1889 structure was only 600 square feet, and the addition from the 1920s had added on an additional 500 square feet, but the whole home is still tiny at 1,100…

cottage cabinets

The china cabinet is a large piece of dining room furniture meant to store and display beautiful dishware. The piece first became popular in England in the 1600s, when porcelain china was growing in popularity. Portuguese explorers and merchants had been the first to bring porcelain china from China in the early 1500s, and it became a desired collectible and usable piece for the nobility. As quality dishware became more accessible to the lower classes, the china cabinet also grew to have a place in the everyday home—including the cottage, of course. Did you know that a china cabinet is not the same as a hutch? While you can use both pieces to store and display your dishware, a hutch is typically made of two pieces, while the china cabinet is…

a look at country life— canadian style

Living in the country can bea little simpler and more peacefulthanthecity, and designer and Instagram influencer, Deborah McDonald of @bvintagestyle, knows a thing or two about both. A wife and mom of two, Deborah grew up in a small rural town in Alberta, Canada. Its open prairies and pastoral landscapes illustrate a relaxed and low-key lifestyle, but what Deborah’s followers may not know is that it was not always rosy. Deborah explains: “When my parents purchased our family farm, all that was on the property was a one-room shack and a two-room cottage, and neither had running water or a bathroom. We boiled water every day to do dishes and to use as bath water. We even used an outhouse throughout the year—even in the dead of winter!” It was…
