He would sit at the kitchen table with an ice pick and hammer and poke holes in the eyes of the coconut to drain out the milk. He would then break the coconut open with a quick whack of the hammer. After all the coconut was removed and cleaned, it was passed on to my mom for grating. She assembled layers of golden cake with egg white icing and the fresh coconut to create the most beautiful cake you had ever seen.
