It feels like we've been indoors for such a long time, so we really want to celebrate the summer and the way it feels to be back outdoors. We're lucky enough to live on the North Devon coast in sight of the sea. We love to watch how many surfers dare to brave the waves! Our special pull-out giant chart this issue is a beach scene you'll love – only the British would take flip flops and Thermos flask of tea to the beach! This issue is packed with fun summer designs. You can find everything from strawberries to sun hats in our lovely Summer Memories collection on page 40. Our youngest girls still love the swings, so we couldn't resist the way Lesley Teare has captured the feeling of being…

Drawing in thread Illustrator Sarah Watson is a girl after our own hearts, seeing the whole world in terms of needle and thread! Her training in art led her into experimenting with all the possibilities that thread can offer when it comes to creating motifs with a little extra pizzazz. “In 2006, I took a class called Experimental Embroidery,” Sarah explains. “It taught me the basics of stitching as a craft, but my professor also pushed the fine art aspect as well.” Sarah’s latest triumph is the beautiful book, Pen To Thread. In it, she shares a huge array of motifs you can incorporate into your cross stitch projects. There are plenty of themes to choose from, including ‘In the Garden’ and ‘By the Sea’, but as you might expect, our favourite is…

Tell us about yourself I’m an avid fifty-something cross stitcher living in Melbourne, Australia. I live with my husband and two cats, our children having flown the nest. My passions include cross stitch, knitting, tapestry, patchwork, quilting, sewing, stamping, smocking, and history, especially the medieval period. When did you fall in love with cross stitch? My very first cross stitch project was putting red crosses on a blue gingham table mat for needlework class when I was twelve. Over the years, I zigzagged through a plethora of crafts but cross stitch was always there. I love it! What sort of things do you most like to stitch? I stitch a wide range of designs. I stitched my first biscornu recently, and cannot wait to stitch my next one. I love halloween and Christmas pieces –…

Meet the designer... Maria Diaz “This one is definitely for my Grandad (pictured above), he loves Marilyn and even has a life size cut out in his large collection of movie memorabilia. The classic white dress from Billy Wilder’s 1955 film, The Seven Year Itch, has to be one of the most iconic. Working from a collection of images I hope to have done my Grandad proud in my little homage to this Hollywood star.” The dress sold for $4.6 million in 2011 Sixty years ago, on 15 September, 1954, Marilyn Monroe stood on a subway grate in New York City wearing a little white dress and fought an upward breeze. The scene from the Seven Year Itch went on to become one of the most iconic moments in movie history. An hour after…
