The Daily Maverick has retracted and removed a deceptive article, and apologised to Symbion Power LLC and its CEO, Paul Hinks, after publishing a false story claiming the family of Durban businessman Vivian Reddy were part of a consortium that lost a case against Eskom. In a letter published on Sunday by the Daily Maverick, the publication said its article dated and published on May 8, claiming that Reddy’s son had a relationship with Symbion and that they were being sued in a US court, was wholly incorrect and that the Daily Maverick apologises for the errors. “The article incorrectly stated that Symbion was being ‘sued’ in a US court. The prestigious Durban Country Club (DCC) has been dragged to court by a service provider for allegedly breaching a long-standing contractual agreement, which is alleged to have resulted in a dramatic fallout between both parties and some of the workers in the organisation. Documents obtained by the Daily News reveal that some of the senior white-collar executives at the DCC are alleged to be financially benefiting from the unauthorised sale of the club’s old furniture items, while using its majority blue-collar employees as scapegoats to cover up for the alleged theft. Watching the pictures of the April flood victims on Friday, I was heartbroken. Hundreds of men, women and children gathered together at some place, with no place to stay, no homes, no privacy and no hope for a permanent solution any time soon. They were apparently evicted from a building that had been provided to them for temporary accommodation. I wondered how long they would suffer the indignity of not being able to have a decent bath, a home-cooked meal and the warmth of a family environment.
