This publication helps them get through that time when they are not actually in the bush. Our reader is more committed, more passionate and has tremendous interest in just about everything to do with the African Safari. From cover to cover the AHG brings you everything you need to know about hunting the great continent of Africa. From the southern tip of Africa to the northern reaches of Ethiopia, we go about pursuing our simple and unambiguous objective.

‘without cheating or trying to achieve unjust advantage.’

Please stay with me on this extended editorial. Though I have discussed this topic ad nauseum while running this magazine for many years, it is now central to the current debacle in the professional hunting industry of South Africa today. Let’s start with FAIR, and how this actually relates to FAIR CHASE – which is what we all hear bandied about. According to Boone and Crockett, it is the ethical, sportsmanlike, and lawful pursuit and taking of any free-ranging wild, native North American big game animal in a manner that does not give the hunter an improper advantage over such animals. Breaking it down: Ethical, by definition is a personal framework of what is acceptable or not. What a Christian man in Alabama and a Muslim man in Dubai feels is ethical –…

news & letters

The four Safari & Outdoor stores in Pretoria, Rivonia, Boksburg and Stellenbosch, have been ordering our Selous Scouts Books (Vol II) for just over a year, and sales have been very good. Now The Selous Scouts Regimental Association in conjunction with Safari & Outdoor has launched our new Selous Scouts – The Men Speak Vol III. And a big plus – Safari & Outdoor are also busy promoting this whole deal, which is great. At our SS cost price of R650 per book to S&O and with their retail price of R1 099-00 VAT-inclusive, their mark-up is a pretty good. The Selous Scouts are very grateful to S&O for giving us their business, which is a win-win situation all round: The money that is raised from the book sales and SS…

safari shooting school - monty kalogeras

A testimony: "Monty runs an exceptional shooting school. I have been to his place several times, and each day I spend with him, I feel as though I have gained a year’s worth of hunting experience. Apart from his knowledge and experience, he adjusts his style to suit the needs of the student. After a couple of days with Monty, whether I was using a light rifle, double rifle or handgun, I left with the confidence that I could handle real hunting situations with those weapons. Monty continues to be my most trusted resource for gun-related questions. The most valuable thing I learned from him is how to practice. I showed up on my first safari after going to Safari Shooting School, and my PH said I handled myself like someone who had already…

duplicity and deceit: how rural livelihoods were compromised in botswana.

This paper examines the effects of the safari hunting ban of 2014 on rural livelihoods and wildlife conservation in Northern Botswana, using the social exchange theory (SET). Basically, SET follows the premise that humans strive for a positive outcome, maximizing benefits and minimizing costs, when engaging in a transaction. To calculate the value of a relationship, costs are subtracted from benefits. If benefits outweigh costs, it’s a positive relationship. Conversely, when the costs are greater than the benefits, it’s a negative result. When SET is applied to conservation and livelihoods, net benefits will foster positive attitudes towards tourism. If local people are actively involved in wildlife management and benefit economically from participation, then wildlife will be conserved as community welfare improves. Remove or reduce the benefits, and the outcomes will turn…
