Among my early aviation remembrances there is one from the early 1980s when at the age of 7, I was looking to a magnificent Pan Am Boeing 747 standing in front of me in the departures area of Caracas-Simon Bolivar Airport. The massive tail with the blue, round logo and the USA flag, are still fresh in my memories. Now, moving forward almost four decades forward (geez, I am becoming vintage!) that childhood memory is somewhat present in this issue with the introduction of the Airways Vault. 1 THE BOEING COMPANY BOEING 777-9 N779XW (MSN 64240 · LN 1567) The prototype of the Boeing 777-9 took to the skies for the first time on January 25 in the next phase of its test program. 4 AMERICAN JET EMBRAER ERJ-145(LR) LV-HVE (MSN 14500380) Argentinian private carrier American Jet (AV) has added a second Embraer ERJ-145 to its fleet. The airline, based in Neuquén (NQN), is starting scheduled services with two weekly flights from NQN to Río Hondo (RHD) although its main business remains charter service for oil, gas, and mining companies. 5 JETSMART REGIONAL BOEING 737-8JP LV-HQH (MSN 42278 · LN 6347) Following the sale of Norwegian Air Argentina (DN) to JetSMART (JA), all references to DN have been removed, including the aircraft titles. The legal name of DN in Argentina has changed to JetSMART Regional, and the Crews of the now defunct Argentinian division of Norwegian Air are getting Airbus A320 training. 7 SWISS AIR LINES AIRBUS A320-271N HB-JDA (MSN 9246) Airbus delivered the first of 17 Airbus A320neos ordered by SWISS Air Lines (LX), just two weeks after its maiden sortie in Toulouse (TLS). Brussels (BRU), Hamburg (HAM), Valencia (VLC), and London-Heathrow (LHR) are among the initial routes for the type. Since embarking on a massive fleet renewal in 2016, LX has taken delivery of 12 Boeing 777-300(ER)s and 29 Airbus A220s. 8 SWIFTAIR BOEING 757-223(PCF) EC-NHF (MSN 24613 · LN 402) After acquiring the Spanish cargo airline Cygnus Air (RGN) in 2019, Madrid-based Swiftair (WT) has added both of RGN’s Boeing 757-200s, now displaying full WT colors, to its fleet. The New Delhi-based airline’s fleet of 32 Airbus A320 family aircraft and seven Boeing 737-800s serves more than 35 destinations with over 200 daily flights. CONTRIBUTOR VALENTINE’S DAY 2019 marked the beginning of the end. That was when Airbus announced it would end production of its A380 superjumbo in 2021. The European manufacturer made the hard decision to kill the program after Emirates (EK)—the largest customer of the type—cut its order. The Emirati carrier swapped 39 of its remaining A380s on order for a mix of A330neos and A350s. The cancellation was matched by lessor Amedeo, which cut an order for 20, and Qantas (QF), which killed off a long-deferred order for eight aircraft. Today, the backlog for the A380 stands at nine: Airbus will make eight more of the planes for Emirates and one for All Nippon Airways (NH) over the next year and a half.
