My money was on one of those rare Airliners International magazines from the mid-1970s. And I was close, as it was the Air Classics Airliner Special No. 2, Summer 1976! THE COVID-19 pandemic has not only claimed the lives of many, but has also reshaped the aviation industry, down to fleet types and sizes. Virtually every airline has been forced to adjust its schedules, preserving cash and planning for the future in the so-called new normal. The airline for which I work, a regional subsidiary of a major US airline, has operated the CRJ200, CRJ700, and CRJ900. Last month, we received word that the CRJ200 would be retired, effective immediately. FORTY YEARS ago, in the late evening of June 27, 1980, a young girl named Giuliana was one of 81 souls onboard Itavia Flight IH870. She was an unaccompanied minor on that flight. She waved goodbye to her grandparents in Bologna. Her father, Roberto, was waiting for her in Palermo. Yet she, as well as all the others onboard, died when the aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-14 (I-TIGI · MSN 45724 · LN 22) crashed into the Tyrrhenian Sea about midway between the islands of Ponza and Ustica.
