WHILE CLEARING my desk during our editorial year-end office sweep, I started thinking about which of this year’s issues has meant the most to me. After narrowing my search down to three, I can easily say that the ‘Painting an Aircraft’ feature on the February issue takes the number-one spot. Spots two and three go to the striking ‘Flying Through HEL’ cover on the May issue, and the venerable DC-3 shot on the September cover. Talking about the DC-3, I just had one of the most memorable aviation enthusiast experiences of my life. Our Airways Spot & Greet event in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, was a complete success. Dear Airways, Thank you for Chris Lee’s great article on Madison’s Dane County Regional Airport (Airways, October 2017). Seeing the picture of the Northwest DC-4 in front of the old terminal brought back a lot of fond memories of the place where I fell in love with aviation and became a certified flying junkie. My dad started taking me to watch the airliners in the late 1940s to see ‘the red-tailer’, and, over the years, we spent many a Saturday afternoon at the terminal fence or on the rooftop observation deck, just gawking or taking pictures. In the early days, we saw Northwest DC-4s and North Central DC-3s; but, one memorable Saturday in 1957, we came upon a United DC-7 in on a football charter for the University of Southern California.…

The retirement of the iconic Jumbolino is an event that deserves to be in the spotlight. This aircraft features super large flaps and spoilers, but the complex split air brake that’s mounted on its tail cone is what makes it unique. 7 FEDEX (ASL AIRLINES BELGIUM) BOEING 737-45D(BDSF) OO-TNP (MSN 27256 · LN 2589) As part of a multi-year service agreement to operate flights for FedEx (FX), ASL Airlines Belgium (3V) has painted two Boeing 737-400 freighters in full FX colors. Here, one is arriving in Lisbon (LIS). 8 AIR NOSTRUM BOMBARDIER CRJ-1000 EC-MNQ (MSN 19051) Air Nostrum (YW) has applied ‘Islas Cíes’ promotional titles to one of its aircraft. These islands in Galicia, Northern Spain, were declared a Natural Reserve in 1980 and are part of a National Park created in 2002. 9 NIKI (AIR BERLIN) AIRBUS A321-211 OE-LCF (MSN 1966) Niki (HG) has applied small stickers to a few of the A321s transferred from Air Berlin (AB).
