In 2014, when Grace Choi announced her cosmetic-printing Mink machine at a tech conference, we had fairy-tale visions of ink-jetting our own shadows and lipsticks, built to our exact color specifications. Alas, our romantic ideals haven’t quite materialized. While 3D has been used to create packaging in cool ways—Chanel’s new Le Volume Révolution de Chanel mascara boasts a 3D-printed brush, and earlier this year, Kim Kardashian West relied on 3D printing to render her torso in perfume-bottle form—new developments have been stuck in buffering mode.
