what in the world

In our May issue we paid homage to the late Johnny Johnston, one of the greatest photographers of our breed. Here photographer Scott Trees adds his recollections. My interest in photography began while in college, and the horse aspect developed due to the fact we had Arabians and my mom needed some photographs. It seemed I had a knack for it, and at the Estes Park, Colorado, horse show where Johnny was the official photographer, I showed him some of my work. He was very encouraging and supportive and that day gave me a Mamiya C-330 with a 180mm lens which was THE horse camera of its day. He encouraged me to keep at it and for many years afterwards was always very helpful. At the height of his show photography, he had…

western division profiles

WENDY LINDSAY CASTLE Castle Arabians Amite, Louisiana “We were first drawn to the working western division when we sent Kaldareyn (Fadareyn x Kallysta) off to a trainer and we were told he would do well as a working cow horse,” says Wendy Castle. “That was the start. We saw how many different venues there were in the working western division and how the horse had to think – challenging their mind and physical ability. “I see the trail and ranch riding being very popular and the numbers are increasing. These are two venues where the average person can train their own horse and show successfully. There are many levels to compete in. I feel it is very important for our breed that owners be able to be successful without feeling they have to…
