welcome

It’s that festive time of the year that we have all been working towards, where we swop corporate work shoes for casual slipslops; ironed Chinos for cooler, carefree shorts and T-shirts; pack the essential holiday gear and head off to our favourite holiday destinations throughout southern Africa. It’s a time when we make new friends and renew old friendships, a time of sitting around the campfire in the cool night air enjoying laughter and real quality time. Don’t forget the entertaining tall stories told around the crackling campfire. It's the best outdoor environment to impart the real qualities of life to your children, which can only be found in the wonderful world of ‘the great outdoors’. May I take this opportunity to thank you for supporting this magazine, its staffers, and its…

It’s strange that some people don’t rate the Cape’s West Coast as a worthy camping destination, as they are missing out on some of the most scenic and beautiful coastlines a person could wish for. Their loss is your gain, I say. Like the diamonds hidden beneath its sands and tumbled in its waters, you will need time to discover this mystical place that offers so many delights. Join me in this issue as I uncover that the West Coast is much, much more than just about fishing boats, snoek, bokkems, kreef, mussels, and calamari, not to forget octopus. Here you will find clean, long, white sandy beaches that you can walk for hours with the sounds of the surf, sea gulls, and smell of the salty Atlantic to accompany you. The West Coast…

This month I visited Fynbos Guest Farm & Animal Sanctuary just outside Wolseley, and what a trip it was. Many rehabilitated animals are offered sanctuary at Fynbos, which is the perfect getaway for families, couples, and those who want a quiet retreat below the picturesque Witzenberg Mountains. After using the long-termer Isuzu D-Max, with its accessory-filled canopy and hard-shell rooftop tent, I can safely say that we spent the weekend on top of the world. Remember folks, camping and the outdoors requires complete commitment and often leads to GAS! Yes, GAS – Gear Acquisition Syndrome. No sooner have you purchased the most comfortable new camping chairs, when you realise your need for quality head torches, a tent for the kids, a rubber mallet, tie-down straps, an awning, a bicycle carrier,…

is there life after …

My husband and I camped for many years. I miss the coast. I need to see the sea, walk with my little dog on the beach. I cannot tow, but I can camp. Tell me, are there other widows that still camp? I am afraid to travel alone, maybe just a few hours down the coast, but I want to try to get away, to sit quietly. Happy to just be. Self-catering accommodation is not the same as being outdoors, especially if you have a little dog. Tell me, is there still a life out there for us? Burnett Briggs Ed: What a question? Since writing back to you, you sent me a picture of your new tent set up at Rocky Bay. Any campers who see this tent – please go…

THE BUG HAS BITTEN We, the Tawana family from Kimberley, decided to invest in a Jurgens XT160 off-road trailer to start camping and to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. The first time we went on camp was over the Heritage Day long weekend, in September. As a family we were very excited packing our trailer. We had clothing, food, lamb chops, lamb ribs, wors, and fish to braai. Then wood, potable water, ice, and everything else under the sun that we could possibly squeeze into any available space the trailer could offer. We hitched our off-road trailer up to our Toyota Land Cruiser bakkie and hit the N12 North, towards the North West ‘dorpie’ of Bloemhof where we had booked at Sandveld Nature Reserve, on the Free State side of the Bloemhof Dam. We were…
