a letter from the editor

Everyone needs somebody in their lives who can just make things happen. The Yantabulla district of far north-west NSW is lucky enough to have a few of them, including two very inspiring women — Kylie Baty and Kylie Fisher. “These two women are absolute powerhouses, selflessly pushing through all sorts of restraints to benefit our community. I call them K1 and K2, but we are never sure who is who! One of them is my neighbour; both of them are my friends,” writes Chris Ferguson. Read her account on page 16 of going to a Ladies Wellness and Laughter Day organised by the pair — everyone in the Country Style office who has read it thinks they might be onto something! Neighbours also played a big part in the life of Heather…

IAN WALLACE This Wales-born photographer has strong ties to Australia after living in Sydney for many years. Now based in South West France, Ian shot the house story on page 48. Ian began his career in London, but spent over 14 years in Sydney working for some of Australia’s most iconic food and lifestyle magazines. He embraced his new home and was a volunteer with Surf Life Saving NSW, where he was “part of a truly great Australian institution”. What he misses most are the ocean, his friends and the “unique light that gives pictures a recognisable Australian signature”. Having visited Karen McCartney and David Harrison’s French cottage, he says he was amazed at how quickly and easily it was transformed. “By simplifying the layout and using more contemporary furniture, fixtures and…

ALL ABOARD For the past six years, I’ve lived on Nanok, the yacht my husband built, returning to Australia last November from South-East Asia. At times, feeling the vastness and isolation of the ocean, I’d seek comfort and escape in my Country Style magazines. Like comfort food, they so often transported me gently to solid earth, homes, gardens and fields so far from my reality as a sailor. I’d browse through these wonderful magazines, reread my favourite stories, focus on the accompanying photos and daydream about the magnificent landscapes and inspiring lifestyles within. Country Style started me thinking how much my life on the never-ending sea at the mercy of Mother Nature, with its highs and lows, had so much in common with those people in rural Australia. I arrived back in…

THERE ARE TWO Kylies who make things happen in the Yantabulla district of far north-west NSW — Kylie Baty and Kylie Fisher. In fact, these two women are absolute powerhouses, selflessly pushing through all sorts of restraints to benefit our community. I call them K1 and K2, but we are never sure who is who! One of them is my neighbour; both of them are my friends. Yantabulla is somewhere you might drive through if you were on an outback adventure. It is all red dust and mulga trees, interspersed with the grey channels of the Cuttaburra Creek, an offshoot from the Warrego River. The village of Yantabulla boasts a hall, three street lights, a public telephone box and no residents. There hasn’t been a ‘do’ in the Yantabulla hall for…
