a letter from the editor

When I think about the most significant books of my childhood, the one that left the biggest impression is Oliver Twist, because it was one of my dad’s favourite bedtime stories. Dad usually read the bit about Oliver asking for more, which he knew off by heart, and he continued the storytelling tradition with my son Harry. Author Vicki Wood also understands the importance of a good story in the life of a small child and has written a series of books for her young grandchildren. Their bedroom, in her Sunshine Coast home on page 30, looks as though it is straight from the pages of her latest book, The Viking Boy Chapter 2. “When my dad was 90, he told me about his grandma — stories she used to tell…

SKYE MANSON This broadcast journalist turned farmer and podcaster helped compile our list of the country’s Top 50 on page 99 . After more than a decade spent working as a rural reporter for the ABC, last year Skye and her husband, Damien, bought a 685-hectare sheep and cattle property at Warraderry in the NSW Central West. “We always hoped we’d end up on our own farm. I want to give my children the upbringing I was lucky enough to have, plus we believe the future of agriculture is bright.” Skye co-hosts the My Open Kitchen podcast with Sophie Hansen and is also a freelance writer. She suggested we include historic Goonoo Goonoo Station (right) in our Top 50 and spoke to Ginny Stevens, whose Active Farmers venture aims to improve the…

INSTAGRAM We hitched a ride with chef Sarah Glover @misssarahglover as she travelled Australia’s east coast with photographer Luisa Brimble @luisabrimble to shoot her Wild Adventure Cookbook. Follow us on Instagram @countrystylemag MODERN COUNTRY The Modern Country theme of your November issue was inspired genius, from the front page to the very back. The colour palettes were drop-dead gorgeous (just what I was looking for) and all the tips helped cement the direction our renovation is going to take (definitely modern country with coastal elements). From my family to your editorial team, thank you. You have been a huge help. Hailey Mitchell, LENNOX HEAD, NSW MAKE A DATE As soon as I turned the page, I just knew — sweet, soft, crumbly and lashings of butter. I gasped — dates, no eggs or milk. My eyes widened…

LATE AFTERNOON, KATIE MENDL heads down the paddock at Finch Farm in Westbrook — located in the Darling Downs region of southern Queensland — and walks among the warmblood yearlings at the stud. After greeting her with a familiar, gentle sniff, they slowly wander off to graze. Katie knows their habits and personalities after hours spent here on any given day armed with just her camera, quietly capturing their spontaneous interaction that will later be immortalised on paper. “Out in the paddock with the horses is my happy place — it’s heavenly, quiet and serene,” says Katie, who lives nearby in Toowoomba with her husband, Ben, and their seven-year-old daughter, Isobel. “I never go out with a set idea; I’m always looking for the beautiful light and that special thing to capture,”…

IT’S 8AM ON A HOT, hazy morning in the middle of the school holidays. The kids are already in the pool, the old evaporative aircon is cranked to full blast and it is almost too hot for me to want a coffee so it must be hot. I’m rinsing the abandoned Weet-Bix bowls before the soggy bits set hard, looking out the window. Anytime now I will see the neighbour’s old ute — almost the same colour as the bleached out grass — bump up the driveway, leaving a billowing stream of dust behind it. Behind the wheel is sweet Maggie, 11, with her arms stretched out to the wheel and her long foal-like legs on the pedals. Next to her is her brother Hamish, 12, back home from boarding school…
