a letter from the editor

There are some stories that stay with you and bring back good memories. For me, one of them is the story we did on the Penton family of Meringandan, Queensland, when I first started at Country Style. I vividly recall talking Cathy Penton out of painting her kitchen white before the photographer arrived — her husband Geoff preferred the stripped boards and was standing his ground. I didn’t want our shoot to cause any problems! Nearly a decade later, the Pentons still love to renovate and their latest project is on this month’s cover. They have restored Meringandan’s old courthouse, next door to their 1880s railway cottage, turning it into a home for their daughter Kirstie. “Every time I walk in, I take a deep breath and have an ‘a-ha’ moment,” says…

ELIZA O’HARE This experienced journalist had a great rapport with The Block’s Darren Palmer when she interviewed him for My Country Childhood on page 30. Sydney-based Eliza has been writing for magazines for 25 years and is currently the associate editor of Harper’s Bazaar. For this issue, she spoke to talented interior designer Darren Palmer about his new luxury homewares collection for Myer and his idyllic childhood in the port town of Gladstone, on Queensland’s central coast. Eliza says the interview turned into a two-hour talk fest over corn fritters and countless chai lattes. When Eliza’s not on deadline she is Pinterest-plotting a new country-style kitchen and seeking the perfect flowering gum for the front garden of her cottage in Mount Victoria in the NSW Blue Mountains, which is still a work-in-progress. ALEXANDRA…

INSTAGRAM Our editor-in-chief Victoria Carey discovered some country style amongst the beauty and history of the Hamptons on her travels in the US. Fashionable New Yorkers discovered the area at the end of the 19th century, transforming it from a quiet farming region. Follow us on Instagram @countrystylemag NORDIC INFLUENCE Thanks for the amazing, inspirational stories and photos, especially those from Scandinavia. I always dreamed of having a country house with a cottage garden but didn’t imagine it would be in another country. I met my Swedish partner eight years ago, and we’re renovating a 1600s home on a farm in south-east Sweden. We’re doing it at a leisurely pace to allow our ideas time to develop. When finished we hope to have a blend of wonderful Nordic and Australian styles. Each time we go…

DRIVING HOME TO BOWRAL, the NSW Southern Highlands’ town an hour-and-a-half south-west of Sydney, Sarah Price’s heart soars. “I feel alive,” she says. As we descend through valleys along the Old Hume Highway, the temperature drops five degrees and, relieved to be away from the city heat, Sarah points out kangaroos between the paddocks of horses and cows. Home is her family’s three-bedroom brick bungalow, built in 1923 and just a short walk from Bowral’s main street We are seated at the kitchen bench adjoining the ivory painted living room, which is south-facing yet flooded with natural light. Sitting outside on the neatly kept backyard lawn, Lottie, an eight-year-old Cavalier King Charles, looks in at us. The Southern Highlands has long been a favourite destination for Sarah, 49, and her husband…
