keto diet a beginner's guide to the ketogenic diet

The ketogenic diet—or keto diet—is a very-low-carbohydrate, high-fat style of eating in which you eliminate almost all quick-digesting carbs. That means cutting out all sugars, sweetened beverages, white bread, baked goods, starchy vegetables, and most fruits. Your daily carb limit will be around 50 grams, far less than the 200 to 300 grams most Americans consume in a day. The keto diet is so popular because it tends to work quickly. Many people experience a rapid weight loss of 5 to 10 pounds in the first few weeks. A meta-analysis of studies published in the British Journal of Nutrition has found that patients following a keto-style very-low-carbohydrate diet had about 2.2 times greater weight loss compared with people following a low-fat diet over the same period. HOW IT WORKS When you consume very…

is the ketogenic diet safe for everyone?

NO. NOT EVERYONE. If you’re a marathoner, you’ll likely need carbs to optimize your performance and recovery. If you have an eating disorder, the keto diet may be too extreme and restrictive. If you have a history of kidney stones, you’ll put undue pressure on already compromised kidneys. If you have a personal history or family history of high LDL (bad) cholesterol, a high-fat diet may be dangerous. High-fat diets are associated with certain types of cancer, such as prostate and kidney cancer, so if you have one of these cancers or are at risk, a keto diet would not be recommended. For some people, a high-fat diet can trigger accelerated weight gain and increased inflammation and disease at the cellular level. As you can see, the answer is complicated. That’s why we at Eat This, Not…
