science; society; sustainability.

April 22, 2020 marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. It was a significant movement in American history that achieved political alignment and united social stratas. In 1990, it went global and boosted worldwide recycling efforts. Earth Day today faces an ever urgent task of ramping up efforts to save the world. Whether our focus is on promoting a plastic-free environment; eating less meat to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; saying “no” to produce that’s endangered or risks upsetting the balance in the food chain and their ecosystems; or just simply being conscious in using our own containers instead of takeaway packages; our agendas make a collective difference in creating change. Companies too are paying attention as consumers are looking deeper into…

Dedicating a new, ornate tableware collection inspired by botany is artist and ornamentalist Nathalie Rolland-Huckel with Passifolia for French fashion house Hermès. If the name rings a bell, it is probably because the range pays homage to the passion flower, Passiflora, which is a genus of around 550 species of flowering plants. The luxury maison’s fine china exudes the delicacy and authenticity of foliage as well as flora, as veins of the anthurium are etched across a plate and teacups are enveloped in a palm leaf. Brew a fresh cuppa in the Teapot ($1,000), then stow your table condiments in the Sugar bowl ($600). Or, tuck into your favourite breakfast meal using the Cereal Bowl ($260) and more. The vibrant Passifolia tableware collection is a feast for the eyes that will surely make…

WHERE TO EAT There’s a strong French influence in Phnom Penh and this is reflected in the array of restaurants available in town. My top pick would be Pepe Bistro, a small French bistro with a vibrant ambience and some French décor touches. They serve a fantastic pan-fried squid with black ink risotto made with duck fat. Other favourites in town would be the new Chinese restaurant Zhan Liang. They have a solid dim sum and Cantonese selection. For a nice relaxing lunch in an eclectic and outdoor environment, I usually head to Kinin. WHERE TO DRINK Drinking coffee plays a large role in everyday culture here in Phnom Penh and you will see people enjoying a coffee at any time of the day, both in coffee shops or street side…

Cheerful jazzy tunes filled the high-ceilinged, all-white, elegant interior of Kayuputi on a Sunday. As the songstress crooned, the chefs industriously fired up orders in a choreographed manner that always fun to watch. The state-of-the-art open-kitchen showcases the culinary theatre that has always been part of the experience at The St. Regis Bali Resort Sunday Brunch. Led by executive chef Agung Gede, the Sunday Brunch embodies the Balinese wisdom of Nyegara Gunung, which advocates the use of local ingredients from the mountains and the sea. Diners responded positively to the dishes served, with incessant picture taking validating their mark of approval. Apart from lobster and crab, fin-to-gill dishes were also highlighted on the menu. From a platter of house-made fish cold cuts and terrine to Soy-glazed Yellow Fin Tuna Cheek, Oxtail…
