For so many years I have looked for a simple book of basic etiquette that would provide answers at a glance. Many of us have had a comprehensive book on the subject of manners; however, we live in a fast-paced world where we need answers now with limited effort (most of us are looking for answers in a few sentences rather than having to read an entire chapter). The best definition of ministry is, “See a need, meet the need!” I saw and felt the need for a book of “Just the Basics.” As a result, I am so excited for the release of this book. 1. WALKING – the most important part of walking is posture. Head up, shoulders down and slightly back. Imagine a straight line from your ear, to your shoulder, to your hips. Suck in your stomach for balance and make your steps long but even as you walk. Don’t look at your feet as you walk (so put those phones away and don’t text!). a. Stairs – Maintain the same straight posture as when you walk. Keep your head up, and back straight, pushing from the heel up each step instead of leaning your shoulders and head forward stepping up from the balls of your feet. 2. Over the years, we’ve become so casual about introductions that we have no idea how to do one properly. And to be honest, there is so much conflicting information, or missing information, it’s no wonder people get confused. You want guests to feel comfortable, and introductions can set the scene for stimulating conversation. Even though it is a bit of a lost art, the basic rule of thumb is to remember who to introduce to whom in the order of importance. 1. NAPKINS – there are different sizes available for each type, but these are just the basics. a. Formal Dinner Napkin (22 x 22 inches) – A larger napkin placed in your lap, folded in half with fold facing you. Always use the inside of the napkin to blot your mouth, therefore, keeping the soiled part covered. b. Dinner Napkin (20 x 20 inches) – A slightly smaller napkin than the formal dinner napkin, folded the same way as a formal napkin in your lap. c.
