the strains of touring

If you get confused, just listen to the music play.—“Franklin’s Tower” THE GRATEFUL DEAD formed in 1965 and performed together for 30 years. Cannabis was ever-present from the beginning. For some fans, it was the main attraction. But for most, it was just part of the scene. Over time, the band fostered a safe haven for cannabis consumption, and their fans were more than happy to consume. The Dead became a way of life, an entertainment that evolved into a self-sustained, traveling community. And along with T-shirts, burritos, beer, crystals and an assortment of other mind-expanding narcotics, pot was a commodity on tour, the sale of which provided for gas money, lodging and, of course, tickets to the next show. However, this selling (and sharing) of pot on tour also contributed to…

immigration blues

THE DEFINING TENSION in US politics these days revolves around immigration. There are sanctuary cities that welcome immigrants, rural areas that rely on immigrant labor and humanitarians sympathetic to the plight of the huddled masses who seek asylum. On the other side are nativist zealots determined to build a wall to keep foreigners out. Caught up in the anti-immigrant fervor are cannabis workers, who can have their status in the United States imperiled by virtue of their involvement in a legal economic activity that is still considered illegal by federal law. Attorneys representing two legal immigrants in Colorado say the Trump administration is going after others like them, people here legally and with gainful employment, albeit in an industry not yet recognized by the feds as legitimate. As it stands, both…

cbd for dogs

PETS AND PEOPLE Findings indicate both humans and dogs have similar endocannabinoid systems, meaning your furry friend will respond to cannabis. Cannabidiol, or CBD, acts by targeting these receptors in the body, which can stimulate relaxing effects. According to the “US Pet Market Outlook 2019-2020” report, around 85 percent of dog owners believe that their pet struggles with anxiety. While those numbers may be high, there certainly are similarities in the ailments and conditions pets and their owners endure. ARTHRITIS CBD can be quite helpful with easing the pain and inflammation of arthritis in both pets and people. As CBD is a pain reliever, it targets aching joints and can give your dog relief. Not only that, it soothes the chronic inflammation that prevents your pet from healing properly. Researchers from the Cornell…

olfactory blues

Just over half of Americans think that the smell of weed is a problem, and about a quarter of the population absolutely hates the aroma. Canadians are even more repulsed by pot pungency. This according to a survey conducted by PSB Research, Civilized, Burson Cohn & Wolfe and BuzzFeed News. The surveyors conducted online interviews with 1,000 US adults (ages 21 and older) and 602 Canadians (ages 19 and older). Even many cannabis consumers in the United States think the stink is a problem—though only 10 percent say it’s a major problem. Nonusers were of course more likely to raise their hackles over aroma; also, unsurprisingly, conservatives and those older than 55 are more likely to sniff disapprovingly as compared with liberals and younger adults. In Canada, 57 percent of…
