RICHARD SMITH / TEXTILE DESIGNER Richard has been designing fabrics since the age of 16, which is when he sold his first design. Following 20 years of freelancing, in 2006 he was asked to create the No9 Thompson brand. He still designs two collections a year for Jim Thompson and, in 2011, launched his own fabric house, Madeaux. Art is integral to Richard’s life – each design begins with a watercolour or gouache and, when not creating textiles, he can be found painting for pleasure. Once a week he enjoys a painting class with artist Maggi Hambling in London. When it comes to interiors, Richard wants to ‘keep the eye moving’ and this philosophy is illustrated by his own house in East Sussex (from page 108). What are you working on at…
