How much do you appreciate the long days of summer? All that daylight somehow keeps us energised far longer than during bleaker winter evenings, but there inevitably comes a moment of realisation that nights are indeed closing in for another year… Our September issue is all about getting active and making the most of what the outdoors has to offer as we move into autumn – so let’s begin in the Dolomites: famous as a top ski destination, but equally stunning without snow, when it becomes a green and pleasant land with plenty to do for the whole family. five foodie reasons to visit brindisi, puglia

1 If you’re in Puglia, the vibrant food culture of Brindisi is one to savour. Thanks to this frequent contact with faraway cultures, the cuisine of Brindisi incorporates exotic flavours and spices. Don’t be surprised to see dishes such as curried prawn risotto or anchovies marinated with star anise and juniper on the menu. 2 The food here celebrates its close links to the sea. Look out for sea urchins (ricci), oysters (ostriche) and grouper or stone bass (cernia), cooked and served simply or combined in the typical fish soup ciambotto. Also try tiella, a baked dish of rice, potatoes…

going up, going down…

GOING UP • We love to be beside the seaside in Italy! And we’re not the only ones. This year’s top spots have been revealed in a guide to the nation’s seaside resorts compiled by Legambiente and the Touring Club Italiano. Cilento in Campania came out top in the ranking, while Sardinia had the most highlyrated beaches. Of Italy’s seas, the Tyrrhenian boasted the highest number of top beaches, according to the guide, entitled ‘Il mare più bello 2019’.• The ancient site of Paestum in Campania has seen an exciting discovery after thick undergrowth was cleared to reveal an undiscovered Doric structure. Various parts of a building, thought to date back to the 5th century BC, were uncovered by archaeologists, including columns, cornices and panels. Paestum was once a major ancient…
