celebrate good times

I was a mere whippersnapper in the summer of 1991 but there are a couple of things I remember clearly: I became a vegetarian and Bryan Adams was at no.1 in the UK single charts for 16 unbearable weeks. Had I been old enough to drive a Mini then I am sure that the launch of MiniWorld would have been been a very important occasion. It wasn’t until Spring 1996 that I found my first copy of MiniWorld in a newsagent. By then I had been a Mini owner for a year and it was like an epiphany when I realised, thanks to the magazine, that there were other people that loved Minis as much as I did. It opened up a whole new world to me. Many of our…

miniworld tribute: peter browning

What’s happening in the wonderful world of Mini? Peter Browning, former manager of the BMC Competitions Department, sadly passed away in March 2021. He was born in 1936 in North London, the great grandson of grocery magnate, John Sainsbury. In 1955 Peter’s father, who was a car enthusiast and racer, bought him a Morris Minor. He joined the Harrow Car Club and qualified as a Licensed RAC Group 1 International Timekeeper. His life soon changed dramatically on meeting noted MG chronicler, F Wilson McComb, editor of MG Car Club magazine, Safety Fast, based at MG’s Abingdon HQ. “Wilson invited me to take a look around. Next came a telephone call from MG’s General Manager, John Thornley, inviting me to his office for a chat.” This led to a job writing Safety Fast articles. Peter…

the italian job co-founder awarded mbe

In our March issue we were pleased to report that Freddie St George, co-founder of The Italian Job charity, was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List. His mother, Giulia St George who co-founded the charity touring event, was also awarded the accolade but, as she is an Italian citizen, it was only recently officially confirmed. Giulia has worked tirelessly for decades in organising the annual Italian Job that has raised over £2.6 million for childrens’ charities including its current beneficiary, Buttle UK. Giulia told MiniWorld: “I really have accepted the award on behalf of all Jobbers from 1990 to present days and I gladly share my award with them. Without their hard work raising money and promoting The Italian Job enthusiastically all the time, the event would…

minis in historics auction at ascot

A 1976 Mini Margrave by Wood & Pickett heads a seven-model Mini line-up coming to auction by Historics at its open-to-public auction at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 17 April. The W&P Mini has been restored and upgraded to 1293cc and features a typically luxurious interior and accoutrements including a full-length sun roof. It was the star of MiniWorld's My Mini pages in the December 2019 issue. It carries an estimate of £19,000-£25,000. Two 1968-registered Mk1 1275cc Cooper Ss in Old English White with black roofs are also on the consignment list. The Austin comes with restoration invoices totalling over £20,000 and is estimated at £28,000-£34,000, whilst its Morris stablemate, is a world traveller, having spent most of its life in the temperate climate of New South Wales, Australia, before being brought back…

the way i want

I remember when, a few years ago, a message popped up on my Facebook feed highlighting previous posts. This post in particular asked me to answer certain things and one of the things I wrote was: “One day I am going to buy the car of my dreams. It’s going be broken, beat-up and I am going to fix it up the way I want… and that car will be a Mini.” The cool thing was I had managed that dream back in 2012, when I bought my first Mini, after dreaming of having one ever since I can remember. I had been partly inspired by my dad telling me about a Mini he had owned in the past. My first Mini was a complete rebuild project, a nut and…

design classic

Thank you to all who entered the competition! It was tricky to choose a winner so each member of the editorial team was asked to choose their favourite one and we narrowed it down from there to choose an overall winner. Here you can see a selection of our favourite entries. The winning design is by Claudia Pearce. We loved her fun and fluid design which features a Mini racing along the road, forming a ‘30’ with its tyre tracks and can’t wait to wear it to a Mini show! Claudia wins a year's subscription to MiniWorld as well as one of the T-shirts. The T-shirts are available in sizes S, M, L and XL. MiniWorld subscribers will pay just £12.99, including UK postage (ask for overseas p+p info), when ordering…
