There appears to be a trend, however, toward more compact projects. Some even challenge the traditional definition of the word “layout.” There are a lot of reasons for the shift. One is quite a number of the folks who built those big layouts years ago are today downsizing into smaller homes. They want to continue the hobby, but in less real estate. Wishy-washy advice Thank you for mentioning Wishy Washy 3-in-1 Weathering Powder Paks [News & Products, April]. Got to get me some of that. Ninety minutes is much quicker than the method I’ve been using. I place my structures and rolling stock in a secluded spot in our backyard for several months. I can’t tell you how fantastic the results are! For grimy locomotive weathering, I place the engines near the exhaust from my BBQ smoker. Three cookouts is usually sufficient to get a good buildup, and the charcoal odor is an extra plus. Allan Andres Plano, Texas I’m still in the doghouse for melting down my wife’s old gold jewelry last year [“Extreme rail gleaming,” April 2018], and now you want me to foul the dishwasher? Surely, you jest! Dan Hulitt Waconia, Minn. I’d advise readers to use only…
