warm wishes

for me, summer cannot come fast enough, and despite the intractable winter weather in the Northeast, I stubbornly break out my flip-flops mid-April only to suffer through another six weeks of toe-numbing cold. In fact, at this writing — in April — it’s 36 degrees with 19-mph winds, I am wearing my favorite Oofos flip-flops and am feeling unfairly tortured as I put together this special summer Shape-Up issue of Oxygen.Regardless, I am super excited to share it with you. The workouts are kick-ass and on point, especially the Abs Anywhere plan to fine-tune your midsection and the high-intensity interval training workouts that will incinerate that layer of winter sludge to reveal said abs. The fresh, new shake recipes sound amazing and offer a nice change from the same old…

my obsessed-with list

1 Trücup Heart of Bold Dark RoastHeartburn is a reality in my life, and any time I can enjoy my favorite things in low-acid format — especially coffee! — I am elated. Trücup has come up with a way to remove some of the belly-burning acidity and bitterness from its products, leaving a smooth, easy-to-drink brew with no heartburn in sight.trucup.com, $13 (12-oz bag)2 Nobull Black Daisy TrainersI’m a longtime fan of Nobull shoes, and the resurrection of these Black Daisy Trainers for spring put a smile on my face. The upper is made with its classic black super fabric and seamless construction, but surprise! Erin CalderoneNASM-CPT, CES, BCS, AFAA-GFIAuthor of “Form & Function: Shoulders,” Page 14Kinesiology professor Erin Calderone loves a good shoulder workout. “The deltoids are such a lovely shape, popping out of a tank top and defining the upper arm,” she says. “And strong shoulders are a must for women, especially if you have a small child like I do — you’re lifting anywhere from 20 to 30 pounds or more probably 100 times a day!”Before she begins her day teaching (and mothering), Calderone rises early to work out in her home office. “I get in a 45-minute workout using my adjustable dumbbells and bands, a stability ball, a TRX and some gliding discs,” she says. She also does Brazilian jiu-jitsu on the weekends and goes running at least once a week. And…

four days to fit?

Seems implausible but a new study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that eating a Mediterranean diet improved athletes’ endurance performance in just four days: Runners ran a 5K on two separate occasions — once after four days of eating a Mediterranean diet and, a few weeks later, once after four days of eating a Western diet. The result: Run times were on average 6 percent faster after the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet includes things like whole fruits and veggies, nuts, olive oil, whole grains, limited red meat/processed foods, limited dairy and refined sugars, and it has long been heralded for its myriad of health benefits. A Western diet, on the other hand, contains more red meat and dairy, is higher in saturated fats and processed…
