Decorating a period home offers endless scope for creativity – there is such a rich archive of heritage designs to draw from, and when refreshed with a modern palette they beautifully reveal how the property has evolved over time. This issue we highlight one of the most fantastical historic interior trends, chinoiserie (page 37). Rising to popularity in the 18th century, it sought to imitate intricate East Asian designs featuring graceful flowers and birds, often with opulent finishes. Contemporary chinoiserie interpretations can add a most luxurious, romantic feel to a room, and though high-quality designs are expensive, just one feature wall in a bedroom or entertaining space can be breathtaking.
