laowa f/2.8 primes coming to canon rf and nikon z

Venus Optics has announced that three of its performance prime lenses are being made available in the Canon RF and Nikon Z full-frame mirrorless mounts. The trio comprises the 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D, the 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro, and the 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO. Hailed as the world’s widest f/2.8 rectilinear lens, the 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D also benefits from almost distortion-free rendering thanks to the Zero-D design. With a 122-degree angle of view – the widest you’ll find on an f/2.8 lens – it’s ideal for everything from landscapes and travel photography to interiors and astrophotography. supercharge sharpness

The majority of photographers believe we know and understand the definition of sharpness. With only a few weeks of photographic experience, we go through a process by which we alter our perception of acceptable sharpness and begin to critically analyse imagery. Through this process we link the concept of sharpness with the somewhat broader and more loosely defined term ‘image quality’. Often we will start to see these two definitions as one, which we then employ to rate the success of every image we produce going forward. In reality, few of us stop to consider what sharpness actually is in scientific terms – an oversight that can cloud our idea of quality, and misguide our approach to capturing detail. Photographic technology grows more advanced with each passing year, with the leading manufacturers engaged in an arms race that yields new and more innovative designs for each generation of products. As the resolution of sensors increases and lens technology evolves, we are able to capture more detail. However, as this potential increases, so does the opportunity to introduce defects through human error, as photographs become more sensitive to any misuse of equipment on the photographer’s part. While this applies to camera work, it also incorporates our choice of shooting modes, selection of exposure settings, and our understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the equipment in use. know your stabilisation modes

Image stabilisation is now seen as a standard feature of professional lenses, allowing tripod-free camera work at much slower shutter speeds. There are often multiple mode options to choose from, at least for lens-based systems, so it’s important to set the correct mode for the current shooting scenario. Standard IS modes are usually suitable for everyday photography, but not for specialised techniques, such as panning. While Nikon’s Normal VR mode includes automatic panning detection, on Canon lenses the equivalent Mode 2 must be manually selected. When working from a tripod remember to switch to Tripod mode, since normal IS modes will introduce additional vibrations when the camera is mounted, actually reducing image sharpness.…

understand mtf charts

Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) charts convey how well a lens is able to translate detail from an object into an image. By looking at a specific lens’ MTF data we can visualise where in the frame it displays the greatest sharpness, and how quickly this performance drops off towards the frame edge. MTF charts can therefore tell us how much detail a lens can resolve overall, and the uniformity of this ability. In many examples the black lines represent sharpness and the blue lines indicate image contrast. The best performance is at the centre of a lens, and this quite notably decreases to a poorer performance at the edges.
