this week in your fab value

Guilt is a word that can cover a range of sins. Things that can make me feel guilty – in no particular order – are a glass of wine/packet of Wotsits too many, forgetting to bring the cat in, my Amazon shopping habit, and any row with any loved one over anything at all! None of them are great crimes, I hope. But then of course there is the other kind of guilty, the one word victims’ families yearn to hear in court. In Real People this week there are some very guilty men, whose awful acts should haunt their consciences forever and a day. One evil man, with a single knife, took the precious lives of two women who’d shown him only affection (p20). And what Bethe’s fella did…

a tie that binds

My feet weren’t at all thankful. I’d jammed the poor things into a pair of brown high wedges after my dance class. Now, on a night out with the girls, I was wincing through a bar in Wakefield, wondering if they’d survive going on to a club! ‘I’d kill to take these things off,’ I laughed to the group. ‘Do you want me to get you a drink?’ offered a 6ft 4in hulk of a man, a friend of a friend. ‘Go on then, if you’re offering,’ I winked. As I was all glammed up in a strapless, khaki green bodycon, it shouldn’t have been a surprise he was looking my way. But I’d not long come out of a seven-year relationship, so I was still getting used to this attention. This guy, Stefan Carr, 27, pushed all…

hang your head

My whole body throbbed with pain. The passing orange street lamps didn’t give any clue as to where we were. Was the reservoir near? Maybe if he stops at a road junction, I can try to leap out again. But I doubted I had the strength to attempt another escape. Then… behind us… a noise… A car engine was coming louder... closer... A screech! Suddenly I jerked forward. Stefan had braked hard. Blue lights! A police car had swung in front of us, blocking the road. They’d come back for me! I scrambled wildly for the door handle and half-stumbled and half-ran into the arms of an officer. Gasping and sobbing. I looked round for Stefan. He meekly climbed out of the van and was led away. It was over. Three hours of torture and terror. An ambulance took me to Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield. Doctors…
