this week in your fab value

Every bubba is a wonder. Out they pop and you get a first misty-eyed look at those 10 little fingers and toes with their tiny seashell nails. You can’t quite believe they are so perfect! And that is just the start of it. From gripping your fingers to giving a windy, gummy smile, the wonders just keep coming. But wait until you get a gander at Lula this week. What this gorgeous little lady was able to do at seven weeks old isn’t just fabulous, it’s a little bit freaky. She’s a tot with a lot going on (p14). We’ve only got a couple of decades, now, to wait for her inevitable Olympic gold… Joann’s brave, handsome lad made her proud, too, from cradle to grave. She knew that Dyl’s beautiful life…

our mad world!

Comedy TOT VINCENT VAN GLUG Oliver, two, has some acquired tastes. Somehow I don’t think he was meant to drink the paint water. Yuck! Christine Williamson, Workington, Cumbria UK It’s raining cats, dogs and grass snakes in Lincoln. Dog walker Chris Tredwell, 75, was shocked when a snake plopped from the sky, just missing him. Still alive, it had come from the jaws of a crow overhead who’d snatched it up but, eyes bigger than its belly, it’d lost its grip. PRANKS A LOT BOYS My eldest two, Mikey, 13, and Alfie, eight, ambushed their dad (middle) in the hot tub with a bottle of washing up liquid! Samantha Williams, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire EEEWW, TASTES OFFAL The grossest British foods, as polled by 6,367 adults, are… • Jellied eels • Haggis • Faggots • Steak and kidney pie • Black pudding • Laver bread • Kippers • Liver…

present danger

Pushing the front door open, I tutted. ‘You should keep this locked,’ I said disapprovingly to my daughter, Leanne, 39. But I knew what her answer would be. She didn’t want to be up and down every time a visitor came knocking. ‘Nobody’s going to hurt me, Mum,’ she laughed. Her house was only a few streets away from mine in Burnley. I was checking if she was still coming round for a roast. Leanne was single but wasn’t short of company, with three children of her own – Louise, Paige and Adam – and two grandkids! But Paige, 23, and Adam, 14, lived with me. I’d offered to take them in when Leanne was struggling on her own. But as she was just round the corner, she still saw them loads. I didn’t think I’d still have teens under…

the party’s over

When he’d been in the Army, in 1998, he’d been convicted of glassing someone. He’d been given 20 months in youth custody. And three years later, he’d been jailed for a similar attack. When he’d been released, he’d attacked a witness with a machete in another court case he’d been involved in, giving him a 12-year extended sentence. Had Leanne known about these horrific attacks? She had warned me not to cross him. But it seems he didn’t need crossing to erupt. Leanne was kind, caring and defenceless. She hadn’t wronged him in any way. Before he’d attacked her, Sanders had told doctors he feared his mental health was deteriorating and that he would end up hurting someone. Last December, on the day of the sentencing, I went to Preston Crown Court. My victim impact statement could have been read…

given away

Eight huge hairy legs spread across the pillow beside me. Each one inched the fear of God further into me. ‘Argh!’ I screamed, leaping out of bed like an Olympic high jumper. I hot-footed it across the room before I’d even had a chance to wonder how a tarantula would’ve made its way into my bed. I lived in Swansea, not Australia! Suddenly laughter drowned out my screams. ‘Got ya!’ my son, Dylan, howled bursting into my bedroom. My only child, 13-year-old Dyl always had been a little prankster. I’d split with his dad years before but my boyfriend, William James, 39, treated our Dyl just like his own. We were both happy to leave our family at just the one child. Dyl was more than enough for us. If he wasn’t playing jokes, he’d be down the park throwing…
