this week in your fab value

Isn’t it funny how we expect a pretty face to belong to a nice person, as if good looks and a good soul go hand-in-hand? I jump to the same conclusions about animal lovers. If a person is big-hearted about little fluffy creatures then they must be decent – right? You love your dog or cat? You feed the birds? Then I’ll trust you… Well, this week Helen has something to say about that! She had form, herself, in loving creatures great and small, rescuing cats and adoring her pooch. So when she met Tom, a volunteer for the RSPCA, it seemed a match made in pet heaven. She’d got herself one of the good ones. Fast-forward a few years and Tom was even looking after her too. One evening he…

our mad world!

Cute TOT BEST BUDS Amari, five, and Diesel, one, are always up to mischief, usually digging in the garden. Amari even gets into Diesel’s crate and shuts him out! Sian Walker, Cradley Heath, West Mids UK When Liverpudlian Liam Thorp, 32, got invited for his vaccine early he was shocked to find it was due to his ‘obesity’. An NHS error had listed his height as 6.2cm instead of feet. Normally, an obese BMI is 30-39 – they reckoned his was 28,000! FRINGE CRINGE These days we’re all starting to look like these beautiful Highland cows I spotted on a walk. The hairdressers can’t open soon enough! Claire Codling, Halifax, West Yorks PET HEIRS Meet pet ‘meowionaires’ left stinking rich by owners… ● Gunther III, German Shepherd – £47m left by Countess Karla Leibenstein (1991) ● Trouble, Maltese dog – £8.6 million…

who the heck are you?

Stretching out, I made sure I was a couple of feet away from the moggy. My shoulder protested in pain, but I blinked through it. Anything for a cat in need! This one, Harley, was feral and I’d taken him in, as I volunteered at an animal rescue charity. And I had the perfect instrument to get a cat used to human touch, without it harming you – the arm of a tailor’s dummy! I’d had it lying around for ages. ‘There, there, nothing to worry about,’ I cooed as I tried to stroke his back with the arm. He narrowed his eyes and hissed under the kitchen top. I moved backwards, grimacing as another shooting pain flashed up my back and neck. Since I was a teenager, I’d suffered with the painful muscle condition, fibromyalgia. I couldn’t walk…

knocking shop

The thump sent me spiralling backwards. My stick skittered across the room and I landed heavily on the floor. The force reverberated through all of my aching joints. I tasted blood in my mouth. Tom loomed over me. He lifted his foot and kicked me sharply in the back. I jerked awkwardly. He kicked again. I flinched. Another boot. The pain was hot and furious. Get away from him. Move! But my stick was out of reach. I couldn’t get up without it. Can I roll to it? I tried to pivot on to my back and then my chest, but his boot crunched into my spine. Screaming, I tried to heave myself on to my back to protect it. Tom’s face came closer to mine. His eyes were black. He leaned over, grasped my hair pulled up my head… Then rammed it down on the cold,…

chasing rainbows

As the number seven bus pulled away, my tummy felt like it was on the spin cycle of a washing machine. ‘Don’t throw up,’ I thought, taking deep breaths. ‘It’s just travel sickness.’ But, heading to my job as a medical receptionist, travelling was never normally a problem. Me and my partner, Ben, had been all over – Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Egypt – and I’d not had a hint of an upset stomach. Could I be…? When I got to work, I grabbed one of the pregnancy tests and nipped into the loo. Yep. As soon as I peed on that stick, two blue lines appeared. ‘That solves that mystery,’ I smiled. A shock, yes, but a thrilling one. At 24, this little bundle would be our first. All day I kept looking at the clock, itching to…
