how handy are you?

I ask because I am not. Period. Full-stop. As the editor of a survival magazine, it’s a bit of a skeleton in my closet that I don’t spend Saturday afternoons building my own rainwater collectors, smelting metal in my backyard forge, or freezing bricks of my signature pemmican. Like most of you, I imagine, I keep a couple cases of bottled water, MREs, batteries, and other sundries around, and I take as many training classes as my budget and schedule will allow to try and fill in the gaps. We’ve spent a lot of time in the last couple of issues focusing on inherently urban aspects of survival. But the weather is warming up and many people are heading outdoors, whether to a secluded family cabin, beach house, or a campsite…

gearup

1 MAKE & MODEL The Patriot Militia The Prayer DIMENSIONS 3 by 2 inches MSRP $8 URL www.thepatriotmilitia.com NOTES Before he became America’s O.G., George Washington was first the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. By all accounts, it was an underfunded, under-supplied, and poorly trained force. Yet under his leadership, it defeated the world’s largest maritime superpower at the time. This PVC morale patch depicts the general on bended knee, praying at the army’s winter encampment at Valley Forge. It’s a simple design that conveys so much history, emotion, and patriotism. You can wear it as a source of inspiration whenever you’re faced with what seems like overwhelming odds. Or maybe to just express your love of country this Independence Day. Plus, it glows in the dark and has a Velcro backing to make it easier to attach to your…

mini pry bars

Few tools have as many practical applications as a pry bar. The mechanical advantages of the leverage that can be generated with a pry bar makes it the perfect tool for a variety of everyday tasks. Unfortunately, a standard crowbar isn’t the most convenient tool to carry around. Not only is it heavy and cumbersome, but lugging around a crowbar can also give onlookers the wrong impression about your intentions. Many a knife has been broken in the absence of the proper tool. Such blasphemous use of a blade can not only leave one frustrated and angry but also injured and bleeding. As the saying goes, “A knife is the most inefficient screwdriver and most expensive pry bar you’ll ever own.” Thankfully, the advent and evolution of multi-tools has gradually led to…

what if?

It’s impossible to predict the flashpoint that could reduce a city to chaos in a matter of hours. One thing is for sure: There will always be some among us who are looking for an excuse to see the world burn. We’ve watched certain U.S. cities silently condone violent civil unrest in 2020, blithely lumping it into the same category as peaceful protests. What will that flagrant disregard for safety and stability culminate in this year? Rather than throw caution to the wind and assume “everything will be alright,” we decided to look into a situation that could potentially have a devastating impact on commerce. What if your hometown was so consumed with rioting that the services and supplies you take for granted suddenly became unavailable? The Scenario: SITUATION TYPE Long-term supply shortage YOUR…
