As this issue of Ships Monthly was being finalised, it was announced that P&O Ferries are set to close the Hull to Zeebrugge route, and sell the two ships that have operated it for many years. Although the route, which is known to have been loss-making for a number of years, has been heavily impacted by Covid-19, the news is still disappointing as the two ships have recently been refurbished. The route is particularly reliant on passengers, a;though also carries a significant amount of freight, and consequently the pandemic has had a more significant impact on it, but how many more ferries will be withdrawn from their pre-Covid routes? asd speedy delivery

On 20 September Damen Shipyards Group delivered the ASD tug 2810 TSM Houat to Thomas Services Maritimes (TSM) in France. The ASD Tug 2810 is the most successful ASD Tug in Damen’s portfolio, with over 175 deliveries since its introduction in 2002. TSM was looking for a proven vessel and design, with a 60-ton bollard pull for its harbour towage operations. Damen, pioneer of the standardised shipbuilding philosophy, was able to deliver the tug to TSM in just over six months and the vessel, named after the island in the department of Morbihan, Brittany, will be homeported in Sète in the Hérault department on the Mediterranean.…

new for grimaldi lines

At the end of September Italy’s Grimaldi Group took delivery of the Pure Car Truck Carrier (PCTC) Grande New Jersey from China’s Yangfan shipyard as the fourth in a series of seven similar ships being built. Measuring 199.9m by 36.45m, the new vessel can carry 7,600 Car Equivalent Units at a service speed of 19 knots, with an electronically controlled MAN Energy Solutions main engine. Rolling freight, including cars, vans, trucks, tractors, buses, and excavators weighing up to 150 tonnes, can be stowed on 12 decks. The vessel will operate on the weekly service between the Med and North America…

blast damages numerous ships

Salvage and clean-up operations are continuing to take place in Beirut’s old harbour, where several vessels were extensively damaged on 4 August when a large amount of ammonium nitrate exploded (also see p.15) on the quayside. The most valuable of the ships, and expected to go for scrap, was the cruise ship Orient Queen, completed in 1989 and owned by the Lebanon-based Abou Merhi Group. The 7,478gt Spanish-built vessel had arrived at Beirut in mid-June following a voyage from Saudi Arabia and was tied up directly across from where the explosion originated, at first being pushed against her berth and then capsizing with the loss of two of her crew. new owners for skandi giant

DOF Rederias recently completed the sale of the anchor-handling, tug, and supply vessel (AHTS) Skandi Giant to Hai Duong Maritime in Vietnam. Built by Dalian Shipyard, China in 2002 as Boa Giant, the 4,197dwt vessel had been laid up in Singapore for several years prior to the sale. On 16 September she was reported at Vung Tau Port in Vietnam. Separately, DOF has also entered into an agreement with a shipyard in Turkey to sell the 37-year-old platform supply vessel Skandi Hav for recycling. Delivery to the yard was expected to take place in September.…
