Shooting Times & Country

Shooting Times & Country 16-Sep-2020

Since its launch in 1882, Shooting Times & Country Magazine has been at the forefront of the shooting scene. The magazine is the clear first choice for shooting sportsmen, with editorial covering all disciplines, including gameshooting, rough shooting, pigeon shooting, wildfowling and deer stalking. Additionally the magazine has a strong focus on the training and use of gundogs in the field and, because it is a weekly publication, the magazine keeps readers firmly up-to-date with the latest news in their world.

busting the myth

Readers will remember a piece by Daily Mail hack Guy Adams, in which he explored the treatment of fieldsports by the press. He wrote that journalists only come knocking when they want to use our sport to feed the beast of misguided public outrage. Last week, a colleague of Guy’s emailed to ask if I’d do a video interview on Prince George going walked-up grouse shooting. As I tapped out my response, Guy’s words rang in my ears but I thought it was one of those rare opportunities when sense was on our side. The journalist called the next day. His main question was whether I agreed that the experience would harm the child. Absolutely not, I replied. Many of the objections seemed to be based on the idea that hunting might…

scottish policy means slow death for helpless young

A row has erupted over a plan by Forestry and Land Scotland to cull red hinds and roe does in September, when they have very young calves. The season for female deer in Scotland starts on 21 October. However, authorisations held by the agency allow it to shoot deer out of season and at night. The licences were only used after 1 October and only in places with high levels of deer damage. The new policy will allow them to be used right across the country. The Scottish Gamekeepers Association (SGA) says the change in policy was brought to its attention by private contractors controlling deer for the agency. It took up the issue because the contractors were worried about losing their contracts if they spoke out. “The calves will starve unless they’re…

shooting sports unaffected

BASC has moved to reassure game Shots that the season can go ahead as new restrictions are brought into place in England to control an upsurge in COVID-19 cases. The new rules prevent more than six people meeting together indoors or out except for work, school and organised team sports. The move is believed to have come in order to curb house parties at which the disease was being spread. Worried Shots had contacted Shooting Times to ask whether they could continue with shooting and to highlight the risk of photographs of large groups of shooters being used by anti-shooting campaigners. However, a BASC spokesman said: “BASC believes shooting will be covered by the exemptions and that our activities will not be affected by the latest guidance in England. Shooting can be…

new bbc boss cracks down

The BBC’s director-general, Tim Davie, has promised to crack down on BBC staff who do not meet the corporation’s standards for impartiality. Mr Davie said: “If you want to be an opinionated columnist or a partisan campaigner on social media then that is a valid choice, but you should not be working at the BBC.” The speech was viewed as marking a change from the approach of Mr Davie’s predecessor, Tony Hall, who gave much more latitude to BBC staff who were not involved in reporting news. The Countryside Alliance was quick to point out that Chris Packham had made a series of statements in the past that might not sit well with Mr Davie. According to its chief executive Tim Bonner, these included “a fairly outrageous comment piece in BBC Wildlife…

to do this week

SHOOT Take a stroll for snipe. Early snipe arrivals should begin soon. Walking-up an area of rushes may flush a bird which will offer a shot. Wet fields grazed by cattle are often a good bet. Snipe shooting needs quick reactions so make sure you know the ground you are shooting on. CHECK Reproof jackets and wax your boots. Your first rainy day shooting this season is not the time to find your jacket is leaking. The manufacturer should be able to recommend an appropriate product to keep the rain out. Fancy fabric boots need waterproofing aerosols, but full-grain leather loves wax.…
