accessories

If the Spring/Summer 2020 accessories could play a symphony, it would be Spring from Vivaldi’s four seasons – a whirl of pattern and colour. Shades vary from the most neutral and basic to the most eccentric and extravagant, as do the styles of the collections. And, talking of spring, raffia and straw are the materials of choice for Picnic in Provence, a trend that speaks of brunches, lunches and picnics in the midst of nature. Wicker weaves and raffia frameworks create accessories perfect for a day on a checked blanket surrounded by lavender fields. Artist’s Canvases are the main feature of shoes and bags that make art their strength. From Realism to Cubism, every art movement finds room on shoe uppers and bag flaps, using different techniques to convey the…

picnic in provence

From the runways to the fields of Provence, models walk towards grassy meadows and clear skies. Straw, raffia and wicker are used for bucket bags and baskets ready to hold the essentials for an outdoor picnic, as in Édouard Manet’s famous painting ‘Le déjeuner sur l’herbe’. Shoes, whether flats, platforms or with a hint of heel, are easy to slip off to run through the fields and paddle in the river. Missoni’s women walk with wicker baskets carried under the arm or in the hand, brimming with freshly picked wildflowers and fragrant herbs. Brightly-coloured neck scarves are tied around the handles and light knit sweaters are thrown inside for a dash of colour. Simone Rocha proposes natural canvas sandals festooned with beaded flowers and a rope platform heel. Colours are…

artist’s canvases

Abstractionism, Realism, Impressionism and more are the art forms featured on the S/S 2020 runways. Every brand takes brush in hand and uses the accessory as a canvas to convey the mood of the season. Alberta Ferretti’s suede bags come covered with abstract forms and sinuous waves in the warm orange hues of the earth or purple tones of a sunset. Riccardo Tisci adorns Burberry’s accessories with nature designs in black and white. Large leather bags feature mirror illustrations, while court shoes with an oblique heel feature the pictures on the upper. Light black lines run over Fendi bags, forming floral designs in pale hues or bold orange tints. Sandals have a wide, low heel and a quilted band, while bags are enriched with fringes or woven leather shoulder straps.…

neon lights

Accessories in linear shapes feature bold, neon colours. Whether in a detail or all over, neon tints come centre stage, reaching such an intensity that they become visible in the dark. Pierpaolo Piccioli designs a fluid, light Valentino collection including some striking Rockstud Spike bags in loud tints. A range of highlighter yellow, green, fuchsia, orange and sea blue alternate on the runway. Balmain also plays with gaudy colours. Shapes are rigorous rectangles and circles pigmented in Klein blue that also features in bumbags and twisted shoulder straps. Ermanno Scervino prefers to use neon as a detail on black sandals with a spike heel. Though basic with a sporty Velcro strap, they retain their elegance thanks to a crystal-edged sole. Nina Ricci offers shoes and bags with a plasticised effect…

accessori

picnic in provenza
