flattening the field

PUTTING TOGETHER PLAYER RANKINGS for this issue and our Yearbook (the top 50 players in the NHL) is a challenging task that gets more daunting every season. While several high-end veterans – Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, to name two – are still on top of their games, every year a new crop of elite performers makes a statement, forcing its way onto the list. It killed me to leave off Miro Heiskanen and Brady Tkachuk, though I know both will crack the top 25 for their respective positions next season. In formulating the names and orders for the top 25 centers, left wingers, right wingers, defensemen and goalies, it got me thinking about how talent is dispersed in the NHL right now. Frankly, almost every team has an elite player…

from motown to lone star

JIM LITES, THE CEO of the Dallas Stars, spoke with The Hockey News publisher Graeme Roustan as part of our ongoing Q&A series with prominent members of the hockey business world. Here’s an edited transcript of their conversation: GRAEME ROUSTAN: Let’s begin with some background on how you started in the hockey world. JIM LITES: Well, I had really good fortune. My father-in-law, when I was in my 20s, was Mike Ilitch. I was married to his daughter, Denise, and I was doing legal work for Mike as a lawyer in Detroit. He bought the Red Wings basically out of bankruptcy in 1982, the team had floated for a long time, and Mike came along and revitalized the franchise. Within a year of him buying the team, I went from being in-house…

new jersey devils

7TH IN METROPOLITAN DIVISION STANLEY CUP ODDS | 60/1 WILL ‘FUN’ AND ‘SUCCESSFUL’ BE THE SAME THING? THE DEVILS MADE a huge splash over the summer, drafting Jack Hughes first overall, trading for P.K. Subban and Nikita Gusev and signing Wayne Simmonds. With Nico Hischier and recent Hart Trophy-winner Taylor Hall in the fold already, this promises to be the most exciting version of the Devils the NHL has ever seen. Will all that skill and personality translate into a playoff berth? That truly is the burning question, since New Jersey still has holes in its lineup. No doubt the power play is going to sizzle, with Subban blasting from the point and Hughes making magic with the puck, but there’s more to the game than scoring. WHO IS PLAYING IN NET? VETERAN CORY SCHNEIDER…

chicago blackhawks

6TH IN CENTRAL DIVISION STANLEY CUP ODDS | 56/1 HAS THE DEFENSE IMPROVED ENOUGH? LAST SEASON, THE Blackhawks were able to score with the best, led largely by an otherworldly performance by Patrick Kane that brought with it whispers of Hart Trophy candidacy. Only seven teams compiled more goals than Chicago. But the Blackhawks were a mess defensively, allowing the second-most goals and the second-most shots against. That’s not a recipe for success, and GM Stan Bowman knows it, so he shored up the blueline by adding second-pair caliber D-men Olli Maatta and Calvin de Haan – the latter of whom will be sidelined for the first month of the season. Is that enough to stop the defensive bleeding? The Blackhawks sure hope so, because shaving at least 30 goals off the previous…

in the cards

WHAT DO KEN DRYDEN and retired NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon have in common? Nothing, really, other than that the two share a trading card that shouldn’t exist. Upper Deck released a set called Century Legends in 1999-2000 that ranked the 50 best NHL players of all-time, but Dryden refused to take part. So, his photo was replaced with a CMYK color pattern, and Gordon’s portrait was embossed onto Dryden’s card. This was done to make the Dryden cards easy to find, visually and tactilely, and remove from production once the printed sheets were cut into cards. However, a few of these Dryden-less Dryden cards found their way into packs and the secondary market. BRUCE BENNETT STUDIOS VIA GETTY IMAGES STUDIOS/GETTY IMAGES…
