road trip!

THE TRANS-CANADA Highway stretches from Newfoundland all the way to Vancouver Island. It is the world’s longest national highway, and Canada does it up huge along the way. There’s the world’s biggest axe, coin, dinosaur, fiddle, golf bag, red paper clip and apple-shaped structure. There’s also the largest Canada Goose and longest covered bridge, along with a menagerie of larger-than-life roadside attractions, including a beaver, moose, fish, squid, lobster, cow, bison, elephant, sandpiper, spider, mosquito and dragonfly. Toward the west end of the line, however, is the most Canadian. In Duncan, B.C., atop the Cowichan Community Centre, hangs the world’s largest hockey stick. After nearly 5,000 miles of driving, I finally reached it in early September. A few weeks earlier, I was in Newfoundland getting set for a coast-to-coast road trip…

welcome to the era of hope

IT ALL STARTED IN the summer of 2018 when Owen Brady noticed a little bump on the upper part of his left shin. It wasn’t causing him any pain, so he ignored it. After all, he had more important things to worry about, foremost among them preparing for his final season of midget hockey and showcasing himself for the OHL draft. And, hey, 15-year-old kids are invincible, right? On Nov. 21, one year will have passed since Owen and his father, Chris, decided to go to a walk-in clinic to have that bump checked out. The next day, Owen was supposed to be on the ice, with the ‘C’ on his chest, for the Whitby Wildcats AAA major midget team in the prestigious Silver Stick Tournament. Instead, he was at the…

mask mentors

THERE’S A CASE TO be made that the genesis of goalie coaching began sometime in the 1950s in the hallways of St. Paul-Johnson high school in Minnesota. That’s where a student named Herb Brooks met a kid three years his senior named Warren Strelow. Both would go on to play at the University of Minnesota with no NHL glory after that. But Brooks would eventually become the coach of the Golden Gophers and, in the late 1970s, he reached out to Strelow for help. At the time, Strelow was coaching high-school hockey with the Mahtomedi Zephyrs in the suburbs of Saint Paul. When Brooks was named coach of the 1980 U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team, he took Strelow along with him as his goalie coach. The rest is history. Officially, the first…

eastern conference top goalie prospects

BOSTON BRUINS JEREMY SWAYMAN plays an aggressive style with a workhorse mentality. The 21-year-old started almost every game for Maine in 2017-18 and ’18-19, posting great numbers. He’s one of the NCAA’s best players, period. He’ll battle Kyle Keyser to become Tuukka Rask’s successor. BUFFALO SABRES UKKO-PEKKA LUUKKONEN, 20, is one of hockey’s best goalie prospects and the OHL’s reigning most outstanding player. He’s turned pro, but hip surgery cost him the start of 2019-20. Once healthy, he’ll start in AHL Rochester. Big and quick, he could be Buffalo’s No. 1 by next season. CAROLINA HURRICANES The Canes have drafted a lot of goalies in recent years, but the newest is likely the best. After being passed over in the two previous drafts, PYOTR KOCHETKOV went 36th overall in 2019 after his star turn for…

jordan binnington vs. matt murray

THIS SHOULD BE AN easy assignment. Compare two NHL goalies who are less than a year apart in age, but one is much bigger and also has an edge in athleticism, the use of his glove hand, rebound control and puckhandling. Case closed? Not so fast. The goalie with all the advantages is Matt Murray of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The other goalie in question is Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues. Despite Murray’s perceived superiority, the values of the two are very close. How can this be? Well, let’s see. CAREERS This comparison is strange. They were considered to be basically at the same level when they were drafted. Binnington was selected 88th overall in 2011 and Murray was taken 83rd in 2012. Both played two more years of junior after being…

mrazek’s motor fuelled by fans

UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES, PETR Mrazek would have been the story. He and Calgary goalie David Rittich had gone save-for-save all night, with Mrazek coming away with the win. Instead, the talk was about Andrei Svechnikov’s third-period heroics – his lacrosse-style goal and subsequent power-play tally three minutes later that led to Carolina’s 2-1 victory over Calgary on Oct. 29. Overlooked in the euphoria of the Svechnikov buzz was that Mrazek had just won his 14th consecutive game at PNC Arena, accomplishing the feat with the same kind of flair that has endeared him to the Hurricanes faithful and positioned him, for the first time in his NHL career, as a true No. 1 goalie. Fifteen months ago, his career was at a crossroads. After years of sharing Detroit’s crease with Jimmy Howard, Mrazek’s…
