There is a lot in the name of the Essential Cruiser Design 22”10 F3 — it tells you that it’s a 22-footer, sits in the family Design range of Essential caravans, and the F3 is a layout — I’ll keep it simple and call it the F3 or we’ll run out of space to talk about the finer points. I picked up the keys to the F3 to deliver a photoshoot for Essential. We had three vans to do in two days, which gave me the chance to have a really good look at what life was like with an F3. Hitching it up behind a new and also borrowed D-MAX, we shot off to one of our favourite spots, about 130km north of Melbourne, near the Macedon Ranges. It's a…

drive to survive

Caravan safety is crucial. Here at Caravan World it’s the most important issue we deal with, especially with so many new owners planning to hit the road as soon as lockdowns are lifted. Anecdotal evidence points to an increased number of accidents, but the truth is that we don’t have accurate Australia-wide figures on the number of caravan injury related crashes — the information isn't documented in some states as a separate statistic. Evidence from insurance companies suggests 8 percent of caravans are involved in some sort of moving accident each year — still, that figure includes minor incidents like clipping a post when backing into a site. In NSW, between 2014 and 2018 it is estimated there were 239 crashes involving a caravan. These crashes resulted in 12 deaths and…

easy to stop easy to go

THE WORLD LOOKS GOOD FROM HERE Let the outside in sans the bugs. The sizeable windows on either side of the lounge, the huge sunroof above the cab, and large windscreen let all the light and breeze in that you need. Turn the driver and passenger armchairs to face inside and this is possibly the best lounge room around. If you want some privacy though, each window and skylight have shades that can keep the light out. A morning sleep-in truly is possible. The tall ceilings of the EKS motorhome really do give a feeling of space. After opening the windows and skylight, there was plenty of fresh air circulating. The two lounges can be moved together to create a huge bed measuring up to 2.17m x 1.82m, or you can leave…

the cherry on top

Seeing a rooftop tent on your car for the first time is a bit like walking into an open inspection for your dream home — you can instantly picture the lifestyle. Once that seed is planted, resistance is very nearly futile. Post-installation of a James Baroud Evasion Evolution, courtesy of James Baroud Australia and their Adelaide dealer SA Rooftop Tents, I considered crossing the border to Western Australia and hiding away indefinitely on a secluded beach, my phone blissfully on aeroplane mode. Instead, I headed down to the Yorke Peninsula for a weekend away. With unseasonably beautiful weather punctuating a dismal spell of rain, I blessed my run of luck as I whizzed around the peninsula covering many of my favourite spots — and a few new ones. Here’s what I…

blissing out

I chatted to my dad as we cruised around Western Australia’s Fitzgerald Biosphere Coast. With slight irony, I couldn’t help but think of the old saying that teaches us to slow down and appreciate the beauty of life. It was particularly apt for this part of the world that is in a constant state of bloom. WA’s southern coastal area is a visual treat. The far-flung region includes towns Hopetoun, Ravensthorpe, Munglinup, and the botanical hotspot that is Fitzgerald River National Park. Taking advantage of its UNESCO status as a Biosphere Reserve, it has altered its name change to reflect its claim to fame as one of the world’s most botanically diverse hotspots, home to over 1800 unique flora species. And things in the region only get more vibrant come springtime…
