behind the lens

Meet Alexandria Crow, this month’s Yogapedia (page 25) teacher and cover model. I got to spend some time with Alex at her cover shoot and was so refreshed by her insightful, tell-it-like-it-is nature. I think you will be, too! Get to know her a little here, then take a class with her in person at Yoga Journal LIVE! in New York City, April 8–11. CARIN GORRELLWhy did you fall in love with yoga? ALEXANDRIA CROW I was a gymnast, so the physicality of yoga appealed to me. But what made me fall in love with yoga was the mental component and learning how to watch my mind and behavior, and to not be so reactive to them. CGYour practice is now primarily therapeutic. devil’s thumb ranch, colorado

SMOOTH AND EXPANSIVE fields of white delight my eyes as I pull up to Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa in Tabernash, Colorado, with my 12-year-old daughter and her close friend. The elegant main building sits amidst mountain meadows, groomed for both skate and classic cross-country skiing. A young bellhop greets us, eager to help us unload and find our room. I quickly forget about our backseat carsickness mishap up windy Berthoud Pass as I settle in to the weekend getaway I’d carved out for yoga and cross-country skiing. We unpack as the sun sets, then walk the grounds, following the steam to the outdoor pool and hot tub. Then we explore a meandering sidewalk that ends at Ranch Creek Spa, a rustic log building. We circle back for dinner followed…

ask the experts

How does yoga relieve stress? Q Yoga has been shown to decrease cortisol and adrenaline, the main stress hormones that make you feel overwhelmed, cranky, and on edge. However, a single yoga class isn’t enough to balance them. Most studies show that significant hormonal improvement requires three to six months of regular practice for 30 to 60 minutes per day, five days a week. While all yoga styles may help, research has examined hatha yoga, pranayama (such as deep breathing), and meditation. Sara Gottfried, MD Author of The Hormone Reset Diet, Berkeley, California Answers to your questions about yoga for stress relief, baking with ghee, and more. Can I use ghee instead of butter in my baking? Yes—but expect your baked goods to be crispier. Ghee is made by using heat to remove milk solids and…
