what matters most

WHEN I INTERVIEWED our cover teacher, Lauren Eckstrom, for my editor’s letter this month, we covered a lot of ground—her teachers (Annie Carpenter, Jack Kornfield, Tara Brach, Tiffany Cruikshank); the ups and downs of running a yoga business with her spouse (“There’s no greater yoga practice than the yoga of intimate relationships”); her go-to mantra (“Not perfect, not permanent, not personal,” gleaned from meditation teacher Ruth King). But the most poignant part of our conversation was Lauren’s openness about the recent loss of her father to pancreatic cancer and how her yoga practice helped her navigate his final months. for stress relief, what is your go-to practice or pose?

I open up my crown— a technique that makes me feel lighter, more energized, and present with my surroundings. Close your eyes; take three deep breaths; place your feet firmly on the ground; and visualize all of your stress draining out from the soles of your feet. Being upside down, with my pelvis and heart above my head, my chest open and uplifted, and my chin in Jalandhara Bandha (Chin Lock), helps my mind to…

power by design

HARNESS THE INFLUENTIAL ENERGY of the deities with yantras—geometric diagrams composed of shapes such as triangles, squares, circles, and lotus leaves, which often represent the energy fields of specific deities. Just as a mantra can be a verbal (or silent) tool for meditation, a yantra acts as a visual prop and comes in many forms—think wall art, postcards, and three-dimensional figures. Melissa Forbes, a yoga teacher and artist who hosts yantra workshops across the globe, recommends placing one on your altar, on your desk, or even in your car, to invite the type of energy you seek. “You’ll want to choose a yantra that helps you realize your intentions and goals,” she says. To get started, consider your goal and the type of energy you’ll need to pursue it, then choose…
