welcome

WELCOME TO THE FEBRUARY 2019 issue of Digital SLR Photography. Firstly, on behalf of the magazine team, can I wish you all the very best for the year ahead. I always find the holidays between Christmas and the new year as the perfect time to think about and plan for the future. This year has been no exception and along with trying to learn to play the piano, I’m hoping to build a garden studio for shooting portraits, as well as one or two other photo projects. If you’re wondering what new things you could try in 2019, be sure to take a look at Photo Expert, starting on page 90, which provides ideas and inspiration from a number of photographers on what they’re planning for the year ahead. We always…

Golden Mist by Tracey Whitefoot www.whitefootphotography.com “Taken in early autumn on a calm morning at Derwentwater in the Lake District. The mist was rolling in and out, at times obscuring the cottage on the far shore. For me this was a pivotal part of the composition, so it took patience to bring all of the elements together, capturing the image before the glow of the sunrise became too bright over the tops of the hills. Captured handheld using a Lee 0.6ND soft grad.” NIKON D810 WITH 24-70MM F/2.8 LENS. EXPOSURE: 1/50SEC AT F/9 (ISO 250). A Tuscan Classic by Tracey Whitefoot www.whitefootphotography.com (Above) “I was on holiday in Tuscany and had visited Podere Belvedere twice before to capture this image, but the sky had always been clear - I almost stayed in bed on this morning,…

galaxy quest

A few months ago, we showcased a selection of shortlisted entries from the Insight Investment astronomy Photographer of the Year 2018 awards, run by the Royal observatory greenwich in association with Insight Investment and BBC Sky at Night magazine. the standard of photography was incredible and we thought that it couldn't get any better, but having seen the winning images, we're glad to have been proven wrong. from more than 4,200 entries, american photographer Brad goldpaint scooped the £10,000 prize and the Royal observatory greenwich’s prestigious title of Insight Investment astronomy Photographer of the Year 2018. the judges were captivated by goldpaint’s image, taken in moab, Utah, which depicts a majestic composition of immense red rock formations with the milky way looming overhead on the right, and the andromeda galaxy…

wildlife magic!

The British Wildlife Photography Awards has announced the winners for its 2018 photo competition. the awards celebrate both the work of amateur and professional photographers and the beauty and diversity of British wildlife. Winning images were chosen from thousands of entries in fifteen separate categories, including a category for film and two junior categories to encourage young people to connect with nature through photography. the overall winning image, which had its photographer Paul Colley scoop the £5,000-prize fund, is unlike any we've seen for a wildlife photo competition and we commend the judges for their brave choice. the monochrome image is unusual in that it was captured using an infrared-modified camera. the image shows ghostly contrails that reveal the flight paths and wing beats of daubenton’s bats. the infrared camera and lighting…
