A few years ago, I lost a bet (don’t ask) with an incredibly mean friend (again, don’t ask) and, as a result, had to run a full-length marathon. But before I even began thinking about training, I needed to purchase some running shoes. With half a dozen knee surgeries and essentially zero running experience, I ambled down to the local department store and naively began browsing through its running-shoe collection. There, I found two types of shoes: the $400 name-brand, high-end shoe and the $89 generic-brand shoe that the salesman in a store polo claimed was, “just as good.” At a glance, they looked the same. When I tried them on in the store, they even felt the same. After some debate, I bought the cheapies and bounded out the…

2016.5 ktm 250 and 450 sx-f factory editions

KTM has just unveiled the limited-run Factory Edition models: the 250 SX-F Factory Edition and 450 SX-F Factory Edition. Since the 2015.5 Factory Edition bikes were radically changed (new chassis, redesigned engines, massive weight savings) and the production 2016 motocross models were based on those FE models, the list of new parts on the 2016.5 FE models is short but very important. At the very top of that list is WP’s AER 48 fork (AER is Latin for “air,” and 48 is the diameter in millimeters). The other changes include a new exhaust for each model (FMF for the 250, Akrapovic on the 450), new orange-anodized CNC-machined triple clamps with rubber damping system, Neken handlebar, and ODI lock-on grips. With the new fork and aftermarket exhausts, the already featherweight 250 and…

mini winners at mini o’s

The biggest and brightest of today’s moto stars all started at the mini level, and over the years the Thor Winter Olympics has become an annual “must race” event for anyone aspiring to make it to the professional ranks. Now in its 45th year, the Mini O’s has become a proving ground for mini racers all over the globe, allowing them to strut their stuff in front of factory talent agents and team managers. The most recent edition of the Mini O’s proved once again that the cream always rises to the top as riders like Austin Forkner, Jalek Swoll, Matt LeBlanc, and Challen Tennant all had big weeks. At the end of the weeklong event, the top riders were rewarded with some pretty cool and prestigious industry-backed awards, including the…

ashburn shows his night moves at the ozark 100

OZARK 100 RESULTS 1. JORDAN ASHBURN (YAM) 2. NICK FAHRINGER (HSQ) 3. CALEB HAYNES (YAM) 4. ZACH NEILL (YAM) 5. RYAN HENSLEE (KTM) 6. AUSTIN BUTLER (KTM) 7. ZACH LOVE (KTM) 8. LOGAN LOWREY (KTM) 9. HARRISON HELMICK (KAW) 10. DUELL MURPHY (YAM) Thanksgiving weekend marked the eighth running of the Kenda Ozark 100-Miler extreme race near Springfield, Missouri. Reminiscent in format of the old Last Man Standing race, the Ozark 100 is quickly becoming one of the most popular races in the Midwest. The format is similar to other “knockout” extreme races in that it consists of two races held throughout the day, designed to narrow down the field leaving only the top 30 riders to compete in the three-lap finale, which takes place after dark. A heavy downpour the day before the race and steady rain during race day made…

jarvis wins roof of africa

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Graham Jarvis closed out the 2015 season with a victory at the Roof of Africa extreme race, ending the three-day event ahead of Wade Young and Brett Swanepoel. Getting off to a slow start, Jarvis was sixth at the end of the first day of racing—known as the Round The Houses time trial— held in the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. However, the factory Husqvarna rider did not panic, knowing that two long and tough days of competition lie ahead. On day two, Jarvis put himself in a strong position for the overall by finishing the day’s competition in second, moving up to fourth in the overall standings behind day one winner Wade Young. As expected, the third and final day proved decisive. Starting one minute behind…

gas gas acquired by torrot

After months of uncertainty and speculation, Gas Gas motorcycles has been acquired by a Spanish company named Torrot, which is known for its electric scooters and minibikes. According to Torrot CEO Ivan Contreras, the new owners have proposed an ambitious strategy for the coming years. The most imminent is to regain the lead in the trials market in 2016. According to a press release from Torrot, in 2016, 2,000 dirt bikes will be produced once the plant in Girona, Spain, is running, and the target is to reach 4,000 units annually in 2018. For the enduro market, Torrot will work on a new bike and bring it to market in 2017. Finally, a long-term project is to make the leap to an electric scooter using Torrot technology. The first off-road electric…
