welcome

If you’re one of our valued subscribers, this issue should have landed on your doorstep just in time to serve as a welcome distraction from the looming chaos of Christmas. Whatever form that takes in your neck of the woods, we hope this magazine provides some solace from the onslaught of random relatives and sprouts. For those of you buying at the news stand, congratulations, you survived, and it’s time to start dreaming about what adventures lie ahead in 2019. At TopGear we firmly believe the magazine should provide a healthy dose of escapism on a monthly basis and help you dream a little. 1 the all-new porsche 911 is newer than it looks

Attention, awed masses and hard-to-impress Porsche enthusiasts: this is the eighth-generation Porsche 911, the ‘992’. Unveiled in the more-desirable ‘S’ form at the LA motor show, this is our officially official first look at the latest generation of the iconic German sports car. Design-wise, it’s obviously an evolution of the old one; a delicately feathered crank of the design knob that keeps things classy, but will cause people to say “it’s boring” because “it looks like the last one.” Yes, the silhouette is very much a 911, but the proportions have had a radical shake-up. Unlike 911s of the past, there’ll be no narrow-body cars, as the front track has been widened by 40mm, and all Carreras will have the same wide booty as the GTS. It doesn’t matter if it’s…

it’s a fast version of the old 911… that’s new

Porsche has (official industry term here) ‘done a Zonda’. In the Oxford Dictionary, that’s “building ever more extreme versions of your old sports car while forging ahead with a new one”. So, while building the new 992-gen 911 and making sure collectors get their hands on the 935 special and 991 Speedster, Porsche has also found time to turn the current 911 GT2 RS into a track-only monster. Meet the Clubsport. Only 200 will be made. The single-seater keeps the same 691bhp, 3.8-litre bi-turbo flat-six and seven-speed PDK as the road car. It’s also rear-wheel drive, but shod in 310mm-wide slicks. It has a gargantuan wing and weighs 155kg less, all for a heavyweight £357,000.…

2 kubica is back where he belongs

Williams F1 has announced Robert Kubica will partner rookie George Russell for the 2019 Formula One World Championship season. Kubica made his F1 debut towards the end of 2006 with BMW Sauber. The first Polish driver to ever compete in F1, he scored his first podium in only his third race. To date, he has achieved 12 podium finishes and one win. The 33-year-old hasn’t raced in F1 for eight years, after sustaining serious injuries in a rallying crash in Italy in 2011 where his right arm was partially severed. But after years of rehabilitation and recovery, Kubica tested for Williams in 2017, and was named its reserve and development driver for the 2018 season. He said getting back into F1 was “one of the greatest achievements of [his] life”, and he…

3 the mazda 3 is more than a pretty face

OK, it doesn’t have the stance of Mazda’s exceptionally handsome Kai concept but the new Mazda 3 is still a looker. Is it just us, or is there a whiff of Alfa to it? Anyway, let’s talk about Mazda’s new Spark Controlled Compression Ignition SkyActiv-X engine. Utilising spark plugs for conventional petrol engine-style combustion, it can then switch to diesel-style compression ignition if needs be. Meaning you should get the performance of a petrol but the economy of a diesel. Turns out it’s not just EVs that can move the game on.…

4 long-range evs can be boxy if they want to

This is the Kia Soul EV, and, no, you don’t have to have it in lurid green. The liquid-cooled, 64 kWh lithium-ion battery pack comes from the bigger e-Niro crossover. It’s DC fast-charge compatible and gives a total of 201bhp and 295lb ft. Kia says it’s still testing to see how far the new Soul can go on a single charge, but it ought to be close to the Niro’s claimed 301-mile range. Either way, the Soul will go much further than the old Soul EV, which had a 155-mile range on the less realistic NEDC cycle, thanks to a much smaller 30kWh battery.…
