Welcome to the Start-up Special! For years we’ve talked about doing an issue for start-ups and I’m beyond thrilled to bring you the result: a dynamic, detailed and truthful look at what it takes – and costs – to get that idea off the ground. Learn from incredible entrepreneurs as they open up about what those early days actually involve: Ken Segall, the genius behind the naming of the iMac, shares a rare glimpse into working with Steve Jobs and the power of simplicity; the cheeky monkeys of MailChimp focus on creating a brand with personality, even if that means no one can remember their name; and the incredibly eloquent podcast host Megan Tan, who I met with when she recently visited Sydney, tells the story of turning her portfolio…

PURPOSE PRE-SALE FIND YOUR WHY AND THE HOW WILL LOOK AFTER ITSELF IMAGINE IF YOU COULD WAKE UP EVERY MORNING FEELING ENERGISED, VIBRANT AND EXCITED FOR THE WORK DAY AHEAD OF YOU. IF YOU COULD ACCEPT EVERY CHALLENGE, HURDLE AND SETBACK BECAUSE YOU KNEW THE END GOAL WOULD BE WORTH IT. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FIND YOUR PURPOSE. 48 founder’s letter

Did you know that the Nike swoosh was designed by a graphic design student from Portland, Oregon? And that, more recently, a 20-year-old design student from Hong Kong was commissioned by Coca-Cola to reimagine the logo for their ‘Open Happiness’ campaign? These are incredible examples of students whose vivid imaginations, creative spirits and out-of-the-box thinking have produced visual – and commercial – sensations. I’m pumped to say this issue’s cover falls into that category. Despite having insanely talented and worthy people in our Start-up Special (Cara Delevingne and Elizabeth Olsen, for instance) I stuck with my gut and set our art director, Em, the challenge of – once again – breaking all the rules on what a magazine cover ‘should be’ to find something different that celebrates the start-up community. A…

SPOTLIGHT When I read Collective Hub, I always come across stories about entrepreneurs who use their passion to help others – definitely something I can relate to! Starting my skincare line was a labour of love, as I test every ingredient and formula along the way. I want to help people achieve beautiful skin through education and the most natural, organic products possible. Collective Hub features women just like me, who share their expertise and advice on what makes their businesses successful, and it’s encouraging. By continuing to see such incredible stories in Collective Hub from around the world, it reminds me of our ability to influence ideas and dreams, regardless of scale. Alana Mitchell @themedicalstartup For the last two months, I’ve been working in Australia as I train to be a doctor.…

In 2012, after “narrowly escaping” nursing school, photographer Julia Manchik decided to head back to university to study graphic design. It was while still a student that Julia – who was born in Ukraine, raised in Idaho, and currently lives in Seattle, Washington – created the eye-catching piece that is featured on the cover of this issue. “It’s bold and playful, so I think it catches your eye,” says Julia. “I hope it inspires experimentation with things you’re drawn to, because that’s what I was doing when I created it.” Here, she tells us how it came about. WHERE DID YOU START YOUR CAREER? My first job at age 16 was decorating ice cream cakes at Dairy Queen. Then I had a long string of terrible, noncreative jobs... and eventually found my way back.…
