It’s funny how the Christmas holiday involves such extremes of activity and of idleness: one day I’ll be speed-making beds and mince pies ready for an influx of family; the next, flat out on the sofa watching back-to-back Marple/Poirot (it’s a weird tradition…) with the cat on my belly and a glass of port in my hand. Between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, by which time I’ve wound down to a crawl, my notebook comes out and the list-making starts: what do we want to do to the house and garden this year? Looking at Sophia and Andrew Wadsworth’s beautiful home, it’s hard to believe what the plot of land looked like when they first bought it. A car park, an unsightly electricity pylon and buildings for a riding school took up much of the 5.5 acre site – then the couple plonked three old mobile homes into the mix! ‘We had sold our house in East Sussex the previous year and had been renting,’ says Sophia. ‘We knew exactly what we were looking for in a plot and were willing to cast our net wide to find land with a perfect view.’ Determination and patience paid off and they secured the property in Kent in 2006.
